What scale maps does it come with please? 👍

I actually don't know! The TopoActive maps Europe (what it comes with) don't show contours so it's not so easy to tell.

Is this better and longer battery life than the Explorer Plus?

Thanks for your question, the Explorer plus was the first generation of this kind of device, so this gps has more of a Garmin interface. You can also load OS maps on this unit, which you can’t with the Explorer plus. I use this device and navigating with it I am getting 15 hours of battery life, you can also put it in Expedition mode which cuts some features off and then it lasts days. Nice piece of kit. Hope this helps.

Can maps of USA be installed on this for the Appalachian trail

You can install extra maps on an SD card. So if that map exists, then yes.
