Les Jeux Sont Faits

This is one of Sartre's many excellent works of literature, written as a screenplay. It can be read on many different levels, as evidenced by the reader's reviews posted here. I believe the deepest meanings are found in conjunction with a study of Sartre's existentialist philosophy. In Les Jeux Sont Faits (French for "the bets have been placed" or "the chips are down"), Sartre addresses existentialist themes of liberty, bad faith (which occurs when people use an excuse to deny that they are free), destiny, and anguish. One of the best ways to learn about those themes is to read Sartre's Existentialism is a Humanism, which is actually quite easy since it is a transcription of a conference Sartre gave back in 1945 and directed at those who know nothing about the subject. There are also some very good videos on YouTube that explain Sartre's philosophy. I highly recommend Les Jeux Sont Faits -- it is an engaging, original story, He also wrote a number of plays, which are all excellent -- if you haven't yet read Huis Clos (No Exit), that is a good place to start.

A great read and provided you new insight on life! I was assigned it for class and was genuinely one of the first assigned readings that I truly enjoyed!!

Okay so I got this for my french class. I thought it was a boring book but perhaps if my french had been more fluent I would have enjoyed it more.

This is one of my favorite stories and I enjoy reading it in French. The book was in good condition, came on time, and in spite of the many words translated here and there, it didn't spoil the book at all.

This book is great! C'est magnifique! It really helped me to better not only my vocabulary, but my reading comprehension in French as a whole. I recommend this book to anyone who is at an intermediate stage of learning French.

Für jemanden zu leben ist schwerer, als für jemanden zu sterben, das ist die Grundessenz der Geschichte. Damit bringt Sartre die vielen gescheiterten Beziehungen auf einen gemeinsammen Nenner. Die Liebe der beiden Protagonisten mag stark genug sein, den Tod zu überwinden, aber ist nicht stark genug das alte Leben für den anderen aufzugeben.Bestimmt keine Kost für jugendliche Schüler, die Französisch lernen, aber das ist Sartre an sich nicht, sondern eher für jemanden, der über das offensichtliche hinaus schauen kann.

Après le décès de mon épouse ce livre m'a été recommandé, par ma nièce, pour calmer, autant que faire se peut, mes angoisses quant au devenir de l'être parti. J'a aimé cette vision de l'être disparu, resté dans son milieu naturel, tout près des siens mais hélas sans contact possible. Cela m'a apaisé. Je m'efforce d'y croire. Et parfois, j'ai le sentiment que cette interprétation est réelle. Je sens sa présence près de moi, mon corps frémit subitement sans aucune autre raison apparente, mais sans crainte, sans angoisses.A recommander sans aucun doute, à ceux qui sont dans cette triste situation. Une autre expérience de la mort un peu plus positive et apaisante.
