Irwin Tools 1794461 16-Inch X 24-Inch Steel Carpenter Square

From what I can tell it is square. And it's made of somewhat heavy steel. Not the heaviest, though. Kind of lightweight actually. Just a real disappointment because this is not the square shown in the ad. The square in the ad shows numbers that are colored so they would be easy to read. Easy to read if that was the square that was sent to you. As you can see from the photograph I have provided, the numbers are very difficult to read. They are stamped and not colored. What a bummer. Definitely I would recommend buying a different Square. They make a lot of squares that are easy to read. I'm sure you've never seen a ruler where the numbers were not colored. Again what a bummer. This is hard to read in the sunlight. It is hard to read in the shade. Sort of makes it useless when doing any outside work.

The square is steel which has some weight to stay in place and not shift. The markings are stamped and protected with an epoxy finish to protect from rust. The coating leaves a shiny smooth covering which reflects light and blackening the marks would have helped visibility. I use it mostly as a guide for setting cuts so the stamped markings are not as important for me, but the numbers are large and can be read just fine in good lighting. What I need in a square is true alignment and in this regard my Empire square is solidly accurate. Its a good standard framing square at a great price.

I ordered this product to use with my quilting. I have made accidental slices in my plastic quilting rulers so a fellow quilter suggested this. The length is the same as my cutting mat and makes this PERFECT for cutting quilting fabric. I also used it when making a large poster---to ensure the lettering was also level an squared! This should be marketed to quilters and crafters!

I recently needed this for a large solar project. Wow does having one of these make a big difference when you need to square something over a foot. The only one we did have on hand was a little plastic based 6" model. So we replaced it with this steel Irwin the same week.Then squared a good 3,400 square foot solar perimeter with it!!! ^_^

Easy touse

The first thing I did, was to check this framing square with a precision square, on a flat surface, and it was dead on. The only thing I did extra, was to use a black paint pencil on the scales, to make them easier to read. I also noticed that the steel is covered in something like polyurethane, so it wont rust. This is a very good square.

This tool is amazing. I literally changed my list of "10 things I would want if I was lost on a deserted island". Did you know you could build a house with this thing? Oh wait that's probably why it's called a carpenter square...

I keep looking for one with a clear and easy-to-read scale. This isn't it, just shiny etching on a shiny square. It is square as far as I can tell.

Canada uses metric measurements, because we don't blindly follow the USA like sheep.

This irwin square is well built, can feel a thin layer coating on it and the measurement letter is clearly marked. I used to have another brand of square which has shallow markings on it and it is easily peeled off. From using this square on the daily wood work, I found it holds on pretty good.

Great to square up all kinds of projects. sturdy and accurate. Speeds up diy work for sure.

Time to update my 30 year old one very satisfied with this square great value for the money.
