does this actually work as a timer?

If you put something in it with a certain consistency and do not change the consistency of what is in it (like put sand, with no stones in it and don't add or take away any) it seems like you could make it work as a timer if you time how long it takes, and then use that as the time? Maybe?

How large is the opening in the middle of the hourglass?

I will take a guess (It is stored in our toy hauler) and say it's around an inch , MAYBE an inch and a 1/4. It's not very big- It does allow the water to funnel through nicely and the same with dry sand-When the sand is wet, the effect is not the same-as it gets clogged. Hope this helps
