Excellent performance. Corrects perfectly frame syncrhonization
I'm using this with a composite switcher that saved me from buying a video mixer. So I got two video cameras and digital media player and a dvd player connected to a 4 input one output switcher (composite) and the output goes to the time base corrector. VOILA! I just switch the input and the time base corrector synchronizes the frames plus I can adjust color, tint, sharpness, etc.I set up for increased color and decrease light. The only thing you have to be aware of is that it is sensible to magnetic fields or transformers, had to play around with cables and positioning of the components to remove some ghosts frames that were appearing. You can trust this device is perfect!Well a positive update. After replacing the out video cable from the unit to the encoder. From regular rca video cable to a high quality shielded video cable the ghosts and video echo disapeared. The instructions said so, but I read that part after replacing the video cable. Now the image is perfect! That's why moving from 4 stars to 5 stars. Great pr

Not great for old VHS Tapes
I've done a ton of research, bought and tested numerous products for the sole purpose of converting a mountain of old tapes into a digital format. I bought and returned this along the way.First, it does a great job of fixing color issues. My old tapes have a lot of gama issues and this fixed them. However, the reviews that mentioned that dropped frames are correct. If it drops a frame, it will also drop many frames beyond and will keep the last reliable frame for even beyond a second. This resulted in my videos turning into slide shows. Some tapes were horrible, some would only drop a few, but either way it was still not worth it for, considering what I have already invested. Also the manual color correction is a pain as well as the inability to bypass this box if we don't want to use it with a specific tape. The devices mentioned below have bypass / off-on features. What I ended up with is a JVC S9600u VCR with a built in TBC and an old iDEN IVT-7 Full frame TBC (I use S-Video not composite). Depending on the tape, I'll use a combination of the above. What's nice is that you can turn off the TBC on the JVC and bypass it on the iDEN allowing you to quickly find the combination that works for you without having to reconnect a bunch of wires. I use a Canopus ADVC-110 for my capture device. With the above fixes, I have had the best results.

This works great as a TBC and frame restorer
This works great as a TBC and frame restorer. I haven't tested it with with copy protected VHS tapes or DVDs. Out of curiosity I did test the device against my cable box and ROKU-2 and find it honors the do not record flags. If the latter is your main reason for considering this unit, look elsewhere. It does an excellent job of TBC and restoring color signals. I did not see ghosting or distortion of the top of the frame as others have described. The color bar generator is great for setting up monitors and TV screens. Support of various standards is a real plus since I have used it to duplicate PAL recordings. It does what it says it will do, maybe not what you would hope it would do.

Comment regarding visual noise
This isn't really a full review -- the earlier review was what helped me decide to buy this device. Rather, this is just to point out a correctable issue that may be typical. My first test of this device went great; the default image quality was very good. In my second use, however, a diagonal noise pattern was evident in the resulting image. After some trial-and-error work, I found that if I move the device as far as possible from the television cabinet -- wherein are a large CRT television, an SVHS recorder and a combo VHS/DVD-recorder -- the noise disappears.I'm not sure whether the noise (the "interference") originates in the television, the recorders or all of the above, but my S-Video cables are long enough to pull the AVT-8710 out of the cabinet and place it on a nearby table without disconnecting anything. My guess is the AVT-8710 is simply not particularly well-shielded. But putting three feet between it and the other equipment resulted in a great picture that records well to DVD.Again, this isn't a comprehensive comment, but if you buy an AVT-8710 and hook it up near other equipment, you may not be aware that the noise you see is a problem that can be corrected pretty easily. So far, I'm very happy with the unit.----Update: I've noticed that it's possible for visual noise to remain on-screen even after relocating equipment. In such cases, the problem seems to be corrected by removing and re-supplying power to the AVT-8710; apparently, the device needs to re-analyze the signal and re-apply its processing. Also an easy fix.
