Is the foam pillow separate from the water base and can it be removed?

We would suggest the only time to separate the memory foam and the water ballast is when you need to wash the pillow. Best practice for washing is to remove all water from the water pouch. In the case of Memory Foam pillows, please remove the foam insert and only wash the cover. You can wash the cover on a warm, gentle cycle. Please keep the cap on during this process. All instructions on washing come with your pillow upon purchase.

Is this two pillows, or one with a cover?

It's one pillow with two sections inside -- a memory foam section and a water section. The water section is at the bottom. You fill the water section, press out any air, and screw the filler cover back on. You can add any amount of water you want, depending on the firmness you need.
