I recently replaced my old smoke detectors because the "new" regulations call for a replacement of smoke detectors every ten years. My old smoke detectors were installed in 2004, but the manufacturing date indicated 2003--yikes! Prior to buying a new one, I did a lot of research and decided to settle on this Kidde unit, due mainly to its brand reputation and features. Installation was a breeze, first of all, and as I tested it, I was able to hear the alarm with the correct high volume. Another important feature on this Kidde smoke detector is the LED light that comes on when alarm is triggered. The light is very bright and useful in case that you need to see where you're going if a fire breaks out and your room is filled with smoke.I really have no complaints so far, although I've installed it only a few days ago. We'll see if it stands the test of time. Some reviewers complained that the backup battery life is too short, so we'll see. It does come with two back up batteries though, which I haven't seen in many of the other units I checked. So, for the features, price, and ease of installation, I highly recommend this particular smoke detector, especially if your old ones are 10 years-old or older.

I ordered 4 of the smoke detectors as the ones that I had were too old. My grandson came and replaced them for me. It took about 15 min to get them deleted and then replaced. They a very nice in looks and will be easy to change the backup batteries . They are hooked up to electricity.I recommend this model

Reasons to get this model:It has a light. You are most vulnerable while sleeping at night. When waking suddenly, you can't see smoke or where it is coming from. With a little light you just might, and it can quickly inform you of some good escape options. It gives you a few seconds in many possible fire scenarios. That might be the difference in your kid getting out or not. For me, that's worth the extra $10 for the feature of something that lasts for 10 years.It functions well and installs relatively easily. Despite having to tie in an adapter using wire nuts, the instructions were quite easy to follow. Installation time: About 10 minutes per alarm. The tests and LED status lights have all performed well since installation. It goes off reliably either when a connected detector is tested or when tested directly.Reasons to consider a different model:This model requires two 9V batteries. This involves an extra cost and an additional part with potential problems dying/going bad/causing malfunctions.After three months on the ceilings: Like others I had an episode of low-battery chirps that did not seem to go away on three of the alarms, no matter the brand or newness of the changed battery. After a couple of hours I sat down to think of anything other factors. I remembered turning on a floor fan and angling it upward shortly before the chirping. I was willing to try anything, so I turned off the fan, removed, and re-inserted the batteries and all three stopped chirping. I have only allowed the floor fan to be angled straight or down since that episode and have not had anymore chirping.

Installed all nine and they are working great, change them every 10 years. Remember to test before touch; that means you shutoff the power before wiring new ones. Or just call an electrician.
