A stunning, substantial timepiece at an unbeatable price
Although I have not worn a watch often over the last fifteen years or so (I always just glanced at my phone), I must admit that I am a bit of a watch geek. Watches are very cool, in part because there are so many to choose from. What sparked me to purchase this watch was a conversion with a friend who owned a Citizen watch for ten years. His watch no longer appears to hold a charge (possibly because he kept it in the drawer too long due to lack of ability to sync to the WWVB atomic clock signal). He decided to go with a smart watch, but I am decidedly old skool when it comes to watches. I don't care about slide rule dials, tachymeter or chronograph functions. I care how the watch looks and operates. And this watch is a stunner. This watch looks and feels like a Tag Heuer that costs five times the price. The dial is cool and relatively uncluttered (I really like seeing world cities around the edge of the face). There is a sub dial that displays the time in another timezone. I keep mine set to UTC. It is possible to set daylight savings (or summer) time separately for the main and the sub dial. I would say it's a bit hard to read the sub dial if the main hands are obscuring it, but that's a problem for all such watches. From a functional point of view, I'd prefer a digital 24 hour UTC display on the lower portion of the face, but this looks way cooler. It will take a while to get used to reading a 24 hour analog sub dial with only four numeric markings.People have given this watch a bad wrap due to difficult set up. There are a couple of YouTube videos that detail exactly how to set up the watch (one was uploaded by Citizen). I followed the instructions and the whole set up took about fifteen minutes. You set your timezone, daylight savings (on/off/auto), day of week and day of month (mine were already set correctly. The only thing I needed to do was turn off DST for the "London" sub dial, making it UTC). The morning after receiving the watch, it reports to me that it successfully synced up with the WWVB shortwave time signal. The watch is a bit heavy and bulky, but I still love it. I had two links removed by a jeweler and I can't stop wearing it. To me, it is a marvel of engineering in it's own right. For any New York Giants fans out there, Citizen made a limited Eli Manning edition a few years ago. You can find them on eBay. It is this identical watch in a blue and white motif. "New York" timezone and the numeral 10 on the face are red, and all the numerals have a football jersey number look to them. How cool is that?

<<< Highly Recommended Solar/Atomic Clock and Great Looking Watch !!! >>>
< Highly Recommended Solar/Atomic Clock Watch > Great looking watch and has a very substantial feel to it!!! Extremely accurate to the second thanks to its Atomically Timekeeping functionality. It’s got a large case and the face is very clear even in the dark. It looks so much more expensive than it really is and you cannot beat Ctiizen’s Eco-Drive. You’ll have to leave in a bright sun-lit room for the first 12 hours to get enough charge to set the watch. After that, it should get enough light to charge itself with regular use. I recommend buying a solar watch charger if you’re not going to wear it often; otherwise, it will stop running. Also, leave it on a table free of electronics so it can pick up the signal from the U.S. Atomic Clock in Colorado so it can synchronize down to the second in accuracy.< WORD OF CAUTION > Be careful buying the refurbished Citizen watches on Amazon. The refurbished watch I purchased had one of the crowns come off. Not sure if it is because this was a refurbished model, but I had to take to Citizen for repair out of warranty, which cost me $79 so the total cost came out to be the same as a brand new watch. . Just be cautious when buying refurbished watches on Amazon. Examine them immediately for any defects or issues.<<< UPDATED on 5/02/2019 >>>After Citizen repaired the watch for $79.00, it has been functioning very well. The U.S. headquarters for Citizen is only 5 miles from me so I took it there for repair. The repair was more expensive that I expected, but it was performed very well, sealed to retain its water resistance rating and they set the watch properly. I gave this watch to my youngest son who loves the watch and wears it only for “special” occasions. He said it is always accurate to the second as compared to the NIST Office U.S. Time at https://time.gov/HTML5/I was extremely pleased with the watch’s Atomic Clock accuracy and its nice look and feel that I purchased this same watch BRAND NEW the second time around. I didn’t want to mess around with refurbished Citizen watches from Amazon. This is a very nice looking watch. It is a little challenging to set it the first time.I highly recommend downloading Citizen’s Mobile App to help track the warranty coverage and also provide the owners manual. You will have to enter the model and serial number manually because the photo function of the Citizen Mobile App struggles with capturing it. So use your phone to take a photo of the back plate then enlarge it to see the serial number. The model number for this watch is AT9010-52E.

A very good watch
I first saw this watch on a visit to London, last December and wanted it then. It was much cheaper here in Canada and just over $200 less on Amazon.ca than in the stores, so I feel I got a very good deal. There's nothing I can say about it's time keeping - quartz Eco Drive and Atomic Clock Sync, enough said! - I hear that the battery is good for a very long time - 80% after 20 years and the watch probably a lot longer - just look after it. Setting it up was fairly straight forward. I like the World Time feature, and the ability to easily swap between 2 time zones. I don't travel as much I as used to, but this is a great feature. I can see this watch going on all my journeys. My experience in doing an atomic sync is a little hit and miss where I am - a west (depends where you are) facing window seems to work best for it, with the watch lying flat, face up, nine o'clock pointing to the window.I bought this version, because I liked the face, but not the steel bracelet strap it came with - nothing wrong with it - it is very good quality, it just doesn't suit me! I changed it for a leather one. To me, a quality leather strap makes all the difference and the watch all that more classy, but that is just my opinion. Keep in mind that Citizen/Amazon advertise the strap width as 22mm - this is incorrect - it is actually 23mm and harder to find than easily available 22mm or 24mm straps, but can be done.I have a few Citizen watches including an Aqualand (my travel watch, put it on and forget about it!!!) that must be about 20 years old, it's still going strong (4 battery changes and 1 service in that time) and is also the toughest watch I have ever had.All-in-all a beautiful watch, I love it and it is a great addition to my collection.
You won't read anything different here that you haven't read or seen in a hundred other reviews of this watch. It is nearly perfect. Just the right balance of functionality and appearance. One comment on the appearance; I was getting used to the elegance of the roman numerals of my previous Citizen watch and initially I didn't like the numbers on the dial of this watch, but I'm coming around to the more sporty look of this watch. One more thing I'd like to mention; Amazon/Citizen occasionally offer great sale prices on these watches. When I saw this watch for 25% off the regular price, I jumped on it.
Since its foundation in 1930, CITIZEN has promoted a multi-cultural mindset that fosters excellence and creativity. The very name of the brand conveys a deep respect toward craftsmanship and considered as familiar by citizens the world-over. So as a “citizen” of the world, we bear the responsibility to help cultivate a culture of positive change and on-going evolution through our craft. We take that mission seriously and steadfastly welcome what the future may bring.
As a true manufacture d’horlogerie, CITIZEN integrates a comprehensive manufacturing process from creating individual components to a watch’s final assembly. It’s an artisan’s approach to watch making based on pushing forward the boundaries of technology and leveraging our experience toward exploring new possibilities.
One pivotal technological breakthrough was the development of a light-driven watch. CITIZEN pioneered this engineering innovation well ahead of other watch manufacturers as early as 1976, which led to the launch of the highly acclaimed Eco-Drive in 1995. Utilizing electrical power converted from virtually any light source, this extraordinary innovation changed forever the way watches could be powered. Eco-Drive eliminated the need to ever replace batteries, which made it especially beneficial to areas where such specialist batteries were not obtainable. This leveled the field for citizens of virtually every country to be able to experience unrestricted joy of wearing and using a CITIZEN watch.
The product development policy, “The Fusion of Technology and Beauty,” remains a constant motivation for us to merge cutting-edge technology with perfection of design beauty, which as a consequence inspires people to strive to be their best at any time.
CITIZEN launches a new campaign in collaboration with Wieden+Kennedy, Better Starts Now. This is the simple belief that no matter who you are or what you do, it is always possible to make something better — and now is the time to start doing it. We believe that better and now are both infinite, and that there is always a next ‘better’ and a new ‘now’ in which you can start pursuing it. It was clear from the onset of this project that we are dedicated to this ideal…not to the past but to the present, and all the way we can improve it. To help communicate this belief to the world we have created a new global CITIZEN brand movie, brand identity and brand website that represents out Better Starts Now philosophy.
