Atlas Blue Prints of True Track layout book is better
Doesn't give you inventory or list of track you will need. These are not blue prints just a drawing and a few pictures of layouts. Your on your own to figure out what you will need. The Atlas Blue Prints book has less layouts but is much better and does give you parts list. Easy to modify or adjust from there once you start building. I would recommend it over this book

Not necessarily for the beginner
Though it is called a starter book, it is leans more towards intermediate and beyond. It is quality and great layout ideas, but if you are a true 'beginner', I would be looking to other sources for ideas on that first layout. Ask other modelers and designers and look at some of the other outstanding references for track plans and layout designs.

Not as suggested
I was hoping for a number of simple track plans for a novice or smaller layouts. Not exactly that but it may still be useful as there are 3 easy n-scale "starter" plans and about the same in HO. The balance of the plans are far from starter layouts and I am unsure if a hand-laid O scale would be suitable for beginners.
