Great for continuing to stay in the saddle
I had the first edition and gave it away after reading it for years. Now the revised edition is out and it has additional information so I wanted it.

Excellent book for all bikers: pros and amatures!
As an ex-volleyball player who put a lot of stress on my knees I need to find a new way to exercise that was more friendly to my body. Having been a recreational mountain biker I decided biking might be my next calling. I needed to get fit, and biking is gentle on my knees so I started researching. As with any sport I wanted to do it right. This book helped, and is still helping me be a better biker! Sure, biking can be as easy as getting on any two wheel device and pedaling forward, but I wanted the whole package. This books will get you there. How to find your zone, your heart rate, yoga poses, learning there is more than pushing pedals, there is weight training, stretching, everything is in this book. It's more than a "how-to", it's a story. Its a Great read! I bought the digital version, I might suggest one to buy the paper version. I only say that because I reference it all, and I mean ALL the time. If I had bought the paper version I would have highlighted and dog eared the heck out of it. I plan on riding till 100 and beyond! and Being inspired by Roy's book, I also plan on riding a 100 miles. Yep, at 46 I'm training to do my first century. I know I can do it. Roy's book will be my coach and has given me the confidence I needed to do it and do it well!

Training to Ride.
Good book ! I'm 62 and riding since retired from the building trades. It talks about keeping in shape , what to eat , lift weights, basically exercise your ass off to keep in shape for riding. All the books tell you that. I've also got COPD and bicycle riding definitely helps expand your lungs , makes you breathe much easier and keeps your joints moving , puts spring in your step . I skip all the graphs, and it gets detailed , but I TRY to do what they say . Very Satisfied.

I recommend this book to anyone that is middle aged
I bought this book thinking it would teach me to ride a 100 mile event. That was not the case. This book is about using biking to both lose weight, to modify your life, your diet and to mature into old age fit. This book addresses everything from training styles to diets. It also advises of the dangers of biking and how to prevent biking injuries. I recommend this book to anyone that is middle aged, looking to improve their level of fitness and lifestyle through the use of cycling. There is one drawback. Some advise is given through the use of stories and personal experience.Use what you can an bypass the long stories. Great book.

Informative and Entertaining
I can't imagine a more comprehensive book on bicycling. The author has been there, done that, around the world, and for decades. As a senior rider, I'm inspired. Plenty of valuable Info for any age rider.

This book has a lot of practical information about training, nutrition, stretching and various types of cycling. It also includes many personal stories of cyclists and coaches, all of which is very helpful. As a 60-something cyclist who loves the sport there are many take-aways that I am confident will enable me to continue riding as long as possible, even it is not to 100.

Interesting pot pourri of all aspects of training, and a great collection of interviews of various older figures in the cycling world. The book makes me believe that I could actually ride 100 miles on my hundredth birthday. The insight about the "black hole" was worth the price itself.

Solid advice and some great stories that reveal being over 50 and cycling are not contradictory!
There are some really excellent, detailed reviews of this book already posted, so I will not repeat some of the comments again. Having been an avid cyclist my whole life, and now pushing 60, I still have the thirst and passion for riding, but my body ain't what it used to be! My knees are shot from running, my cardio system is showing the signs of age, and my muscles are starting to be very vocal about taking life a bit easier. So, while I have backed off on my riding long distances (I used to love doing centuries every weekend), I'm lucky to do a century with accumulated mileage in the week now! And while today's wonderful bikes are far better than the ones I rode 30 years ago, it's the body that's the limiting factor now, not the technology (although I do love my super-light bike, outfitted with computer technology we could only dream of tirthy years ago).I came across this book on a colleague's desk. He's an avid (younger) cyclist, just turned to his 50s, and he was reading this book and reported enjoying it, so I ordered my own copy. In some ways, the advice in this book is sensible, and, with medical training, I already knew a great deal about the physiology of the body as it ages and reactions to exercise. But what struck me more about this book than anything else is the approach that says not to stop, but do things differently. Push hard some days, and ease off more on easy days: before reading this, my easy days were much more strenuous than the author recommends. Also, there's diet advice (which I read with interest and then go eat a bowl of french fries), a discussion on physical limits as you age (useful for most people, I suspect), and some nice profiles of older riders that show you what can and can't be done. The book is illustrated nicely, well written, easy to read, and gives lots of interviews with riders. There's a lot to like here, and if you're nearing or over 50, like cycling, and want to keep at it, then this is a great buy and read.
