Ford sent out a memo around 2005 or 2006 that Mercon V (5) will be replacing Mercon. It is for use in power steering and transmissions. Originally, it was shown in the “OM” for 2002 and 2003 Lincoln Navigators to use “power steering” fluid. The power steering fluid was actually Mercon ATF - same color too. A bit of additional information.... Mercon V was reformulated to be compatible with transmissions factory filled with Mercon ATF. Best, however, to drain/refill the transmission 4 or 5 times, driving for about 50 miles after each refill to remove all the Mercon, although the two are compatible. For best maintenance do a drain/refill every 30,000 or 40,000 miles (or sooner if you pull a tailor a lot). Assuming you have installed a drain plug or a pan with a drain plug the drain/refill is quite easy. Replace the filter every 60,000 to 80,000 - sooner if you pull a trailer a lot. You will need to remove the pan to to get to the filter. Be sure to completely clean the pan of any dark grey matter and clean thoroughly the magnet that is located in the bottom of the pan. Use a parts cleaner to clean both. Replace the magnet in the same location in the pan. There should be three or “dimples” in the pan so that the magnet sits slightly elevated to allow the transmission fluid to circulate above and below and all around the magnet to catch the maximum amount of matter. If you find the magnet is missing get a replacement. It’s very crucial to have a strong, circular shaped magnet in the pan. It has a hole in the center too.
