CP Cats: A Complete Guide to Drawing Cats in Colored Pencil

The presentation and layout of this book is attractive and professionally prepared. It did not provide me with a thorough step by step process with individual steps showing the painting graduation, detailing who to do that I was expecting for the price. Lots of verbal information provided, but I wanted to see the step by step process as I have with the trace and color series I have purchased, so I was disappointed. There was a picture portrait of a kitten that was just a photo but nothing more, gorgeous. I checked out her classes and tutorials on-line and she is a wonderful teacher hands on and I plan to take her on-line tutorials soon. I believe that my money would have been well spent if I had used it to buy Gemma Gylling's classes on-line, because visual learning is a lot easier than reading it. I am a beginner colored pencil artist and this book is suited for someone who already has a working experience this medium. Her classes on-line would be my preference in hindsight.

I've never really considered myself to be an artist and I have only been drawing with color pencils for about 6 months; but, I have found that I love drawing with color pencils, and I also love cats, so of course this book was a must have. I was a little intimidated because I didn't think I'd ever be able to draw as well as the pictures in the book. After 3 months of carefully studying each page, Yesterday I finally took out the book (after 3 months) and decided to draw a cat eye using the guidance/instructions in the book; I couldn't believe how beautiful it came out, so much so, that I decided to do the other eye, and then the nose and mouth. Surprisingly, everything came out looking fantastic and now I can't wait to draw the other pictures. The instructions are quite easy to follow and I like the tips and other information given about techniques and supplies. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the use of the suede mat board, which is generally very expensive if purchased anywhere other than the authors website.

I was expecting instructions with step by step photos. Photos were more of finished pieces of portraits than showing how to achieve that look. Many photos had type below them that was very tiny and in a light color making it extremely hard to read. I had to use a magnifying glass. The references to the author's travels and information about the animals were interesting but the space would have been better used to show photos of how to create portraits. There were large photos of strokes seemingly to take up space. This was nothing like the other instructional books in my library. I felt the book promoted it's author more than it gave instruction to a colored pencil artist. Giving it 3 stars is being generous.

I love drawing with color pencils and the detail with fur is amazing.

Wonderful book but overpriced for being paper-backed and the number of pages. That being said it did contain some useful information. I would say it was a really great buy if it had been a $15 book instead of nearly $30.

Excellent book. Ms. Gylling is very clear in her instructions. Great use of photos and illustrations. Although this covers cats, most of the principles and instructions are applicable to drawing other animals. I have also taken her Craftsy class which is also great - the book and the class go hand in hand.

Tells you what tools to get, but doesn't tell you what they're for or how to use them.

I paint using all different mediums but this book is teaching me how to see that the beige fur really isn't beige at all but a combination of lots of colors. Great book. I usually prefer videos but I am glad I bought this.

Very happy with this compendium of coloured pencil drawings. Great selection of subject matter and instructions to achieve your own professional results are well written and laid out.

This book has great descriptions, step-by-step tutorials etc on drawing cats in coloured pencils.However, for such an expensive book, I did not expect to have to pay an additional fee (currently $14) to the website to obtain the reference photos for the exercises in the book, without which it would be pretty much impossible to follow along with the tuition in the book. The reference photos given are only about 5 by 5cm size!So bear in mind that you need to budget an additional £10 for the reference photos!
