Battery did not last long
We were disappointed in this product. Within a week or so, the device stopped working. We have one of the solar powered ones and it works great. It's in its second year, so we will purchase more of those rather than the battery operated ones.

Save your money, skip this product
Purchased 2 units. One failed after 5 weeks (just after the 30 day return window). Contacted the manufacturer (Exhart) and after a couple of back-n-forth emails I have been rewarded with silence and have lost hope for a resolution (credit or a replacement unit). If you do purchase these just note that they are noisy. They have to be at least 100' away from them so if you are thinking about installing them near a seating area you might want to consider that.

Give it a try, it’s working for me.
Easy to install. Solar works great so far. It seems my moles are moving out.

Use Only in Well Drained Soil
I purchased 4 of these to help deter voles from entering our garden. The good news is that I think these are helping to deter the voles, but also need to call out that I have multiple layers of defense: buried hardware cloth, castor oil and poison bait station. Believe it or not the buried hardware (+12" deep) was not enough to deter all of the voles. Everything I've read tells me voles don't dig very deep, but apparently we have a few voles that didn't get the memo or they used a previous ground hog burrow. In any case, I added the Sonic Spikes to my defenses and no more voles. Now the bad news: Don't try to install these in areas where clay soil retains water; they will fail. Works OK in soil that gets moist, but they flood from the bottom if they sit in water. Great customer service from Bonide. They refunded me for purchase of the failed spikes...I tried twice in the same location, flood/fail both times.

7 Months, original battery, and still no chipmunks under the stone patio
I waited a few months to review and so far after 7 months the several chipmunks that tunneled under our flagstone patio appear to have moved to a new home. They were causing a lot of damage by tunneling right under the flagstones which then left big holes and hollow spaces causing the flat bluestones to become uneven and in several cases they were dangerous to step on because one end would be missing several inches of sand, making the stones rock. I had no idea they could be co destructive, and soon after my children got over the 'they are cute Dad, leave them alone, everyone deserves a home' phase because they saw the damage - that was it...war was declared....So after 7 months...... Daddy: 1 | chipmunks: 0.I bought the battery operated one rather than the solar one and it still has the original battery, still chirps every 36 seconds or so.My neighbor was worried when one day he saw me squatting down listening to the patio stones, he came over and started talking to me like I was crazy until I realized that he must have seen me downs listening to the ground.Buy it, you won't regret itNow he too has a Molemax - sometimes the crazy neighbor is not so crazy...

SEE UPDATE: Bonide FAILED after TWO MONTHS.
(May 2015) I hope it's not a fluke, or coincidence, but I put the stake in according to the instructions, and i haven't seen the little mole bastards back since. This device has a different screech than the Sweeney's version. It actually sounds like a mole in distress vs the Sweeney sonic stake that seems designed to annoy vs scare. But, the result is that I haven't seen any more mole burrows since the day after I put it in the ground.I was worried about hearing the device, but if placed properly -- a one inch wide hole dug about 12 inches into the ground, sensor up exposing it to at least 4 hours of direct light per day -- it emits a noise well underground so you would NOT be able to hear it unless you were next to it and it was very quiet outside. Even then, it's a low whine that won't disturb you even if you are in the yard. But it seems to frighten the rodents! The device is weatherproof (be sure to place it low in the ground so you don't have mower issues) but plan to pull it out (and turn it off) for winter storage (when moles aren't around anyway). I am pleased, but will update this review at the end of the summer or when/if the moles return.UPDATE (June 2015): I bought this sonic stick in early May, it worked fine (see review above), but in mid-June, it stopped working, and now moles have returned. No reset, no indicators, no sound! Useless piece of plastic now. I pulled up the Bonide version, replaced it with the Sweeney's version, and no moles again. $20 for two months of Bonide protection/repellent is unacceptable!

It works!
After years of trying every product on the store shelf and buying the Talpirid worms for voles and moles on line, nothing worked.I thought why not try the solar spike for moles?I bought one and after a week, we noticed there were no new tunnels. So I went online and bought one for every side of my yard.Works so well, the neighbors yard next to us have no more tunnels?Buy this product, you will be glad to finally get rid of the pest and no more stepping in holes from the damage they cause in the yard.

Never worked-don't waste your time or money (updated review)
UPDATE: (7/26/22). Product NEVER WORKED. Been in one full week. Followed instructions. Put in ground one week ago today. By mid-afternoon, the two gophers were back. They've been back DAILY and multiple times during the day (the only thing that "may" deter them is the heat. A few days ago, BOTH were 2 (TWO) feet away from the sonic stick---which means it doesn't work. They've also been 6,10, 20 feet away and nothing! How LONG does it take this to work? We've had a ground hog issue for about 7 years & that one had 2 "babies" a couple of months ago (which don't LOOK LIKE babies anymore). A neighbor told me about the product, ordered it-came quickly.I put the sonic stick up-followed directions yesterday AM. Late yesterday afternoon, I saw the ground hog run under an area of the house NEAR the sonic stick (like 5-7 feet away). As I write, its back NOW in the yard and was in our flower bed. I had to "shoe" it away as always-TOO CLOSE which leads to the porch!Does anyone know HOW LONG it takes this to work? Can someone help?
