Heroes of the Revolution

A good basic introduction for young people about some of the heroes of the American Revolution.
Lately I have been interested in reading several American history books. I saw this book on Amazon (Heroes of the Revolution by David A. Adler, illustrated by Donald A, Smith) and purchased it. I really liked this short 32 page text even though it is clearly aimed at younger readers. Nevertheless, I was not familiar with some of these American patriots until I read this booklet. In this respect I think this volume is a good introduction to many of the heroes of American history. This large (8 by 11) size paperback lists 12 individuals who are considered patriots of the revolution. They are: Ethan Allen, Crispus Attucks, Lydia Darragh, Nathan Hale, Mary “Molly Pitcher” Hays, Thomas Jefferson, John Paul Jones, Thomas Paine, Paul Revere, Haym Salomon, Deborah Sampson, and George Washington. This booklet also has author’s notes, important dates, source notes and selected bibliography. Each selection has a color illustration and a short one page overview of the person being written about. This is a wonderful very basic introduction about some of the American patriots of the revolution which young people will love.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Never Trust a Politician: A critical review of politics and politicians).

Pleasantly surprised.
You could not really tell from it's description whether this book would be the right choice for a gift, but it is a wonderful book. It even includes some women and their heroic roles in our nation's history. We made a perfect choice!

Outstanding
David A. Adler does a great job with brief biographical information; Donald A. Smith serves up LARGE, beautiful illustrations. This book belongs on your child's bookshelf -- a great look at fighters, spies, writers, and thinkers.

Great intro to the Revolutionary War
My boys (7 and 5) really enjoy this book. We read about one or two heroes at a time and it's just enough info to get their attention and keep them interested without going into too much detail. It was the springboard for my older son's interest in more in depth books on the Revolution such as LET IT BEGIN HERE or WHEN WASHINGTON CROSSED THE DELAWARE. David Adler is a wonderful author for children's non-fiction and fiction alike!
