Is this wire strong enough to make rosaries that won't fall apart with repeated use?

Use at least 20 gauge wire, the lower the gauge number the thicker / stronger the wire. 18 gauge will be stronger, so be sure to test the beads to be sure they fit.  Strength will depend on the core of the wire.  Brass core is stronger, steel core is stronger, copper core is softer and would need wrapped loops.   Be sure to test the wire you choose in the bead holes, to be sure the wire will pass through the beads.  If you make wrapped loops, it will not fall apart.  If you test simple loops by constructing, looping and pulling harder than you will expect to need, you can determine if simple loops will be strong enough to hold together.  Either way, a personally constructed rosary would be awesome. My 20 ga brass is quite strong.

Which is stronger, lower gage or higher?

I would say that lower gauge is stronger, but it's also thicker, which makes it more difficult to work with. The lower the number the thicker the wire. If you are making earrings, 22 gauge would be for the hoop and 26 would be used to string the beads and wrap around the hoop. I hope Tuesday helps.
