Amazing
I have never read anything that affected me the way this book did. I read it through Lent and I can’t imagine not reading it over and over

Inspiring and meditative after the first Long chapter.
Unless really interested in biblical history of the holy land, the first chapter is tedious and I almost gave up. After that the book is wonderful. Can only read short excerpts at a time because so much to think about and take into your heart

Meditation on the Passion
As remarked by other reviewers, this pre-Vatican II book's tone resembles that of Bishop Fulton Sheen's Life of Christ , a poetic meditative prose narrative that pulling in disparate threads from theology, history, literature, and philosophy - a good book to read during Holy Week in the run up to Easter Sunday. The author, AG Sertilanges, tightly focuses on the period from the Last Supper to the consummation of the crucifixion on Calvary. The translation is questionable or else Sertilanges' ideas were questionable. He was a Dominican, so that may explain it. But there are occasional turns of phrase that seem of dubious orthodoxy.I'm somewhat disappointed in the book, as I had expected, based on other reviews, that there would be more emphasis on the actual sights and scenes of Jerusalem as Jesus Christ would have seen them. Surely that's there. But not to the degree I'd imagined. I think pictures and drawings and computer-generated images, while requiring editorial work, would certainly spice this book up. The book is an imaginative, well-reasoned thought experiment of what might have been the impressions of Christ during those last hours."Mobs do not like to be disillusioned; and the man who disappoints them may pass in a moment from the rank of a national hero to nothing, and even to less than nothing. The sympathies of the mob are liable to revulsions. Many a crashing fall in history has been due to no more than this. Think what a disillusionment it is for the Jews to see Jesus in this condition before Pilate, to say nothing of the other accusations against Him to which that condition easily lent credit. The Liberator of the chosen people appearing as a leader of sedition before a Roman tribunal and unable to acquit himself of the charge! This is the Pauline 'scandal of the Cross' by anticipation, and we can understand that an infuriated crowd will leave Him to His fate" (p. 159).AG Sertilanges was an excellent author; see also his Thomas Aquinas and The Intellectual Life: Its Spirit, Conditions, Methods .

A wonderful book especially during Lent
I hope to read this book many times as a wonderful spiritual resource especially during Lent, but also anytime to meditate on the Passion of Christ. I highly recommend it.

Get through the first couple of chapters and you'll be rewarded.
I'll admit that it was tough getting through the first few chapters. It was wordy and hard to understand. I was ready to give up but kept at it because I was reading this for a book club. I'm so glad I stuck it out because once I got into it, I was often moved to tears by the descriptions of Christ's suffering and that of the people who knew and loved him while he was on earth. This was originally written in French in 1930 and was translated into English. That may explain some of the difficulty with the wording in the beginning. I encourage you to get through the first part if you're struggling to read this book. You will be rewarded by beautiful imagery and a better understanding of Christ's sacrifice and how this affected those around Him.

Highly recommended
Father A. G. Sertillanges lived in the Jerusalem area for many years. Because of his knowledge of landmarks, he places the reader into the eyes of Jesus as they sweep over the Jerusalem landscape from His vantage point on the Cross. As His eyes touch on the individual points of interest such as the Cenacle (sight of the Last Supper) Fr. Sertilanges has Jesus recall the events that have taken place and the words that were said in that spot. He draws upon the Gospels and also his own imagination of what Jesus is thinking as He recalls each event. It is truly a remarkable way of looking at the last days of Jesus and His last hours on the Cross. I read this book as part of my Lenten devotions for 2014 but think it would be beneficial to anyone seeking to strengthen their faith at any time of the year. It would also be a great book to be read by a Scriptural book club. It has my most highest recommendation.

MOVING
It was so moving. The perfect book to read over the course of Lent. It gave me a totally new perspective on the Passion and Death of Jesus. Hard to read at times because it made me realize the part my sins have played in the necessity of Him having to redeem all of us by such a gift. Sometimes it's too easy to blame those who were alive at the time and forget our part in it. At one time or other I believe we have all yelled "Crucify Him" by our thoughts and/or actions. I feel an even deeper gratitude for this gift of Salvation as this book really brought it home to me.

Unique reading, especially during Lent
This is a wonderful book, that can be read repeatedly. It is worthy of the reader's time and dedication. If you do not have background historical information, it will require further study. The historical and religious content are beyond much of what passes as religious reading. Frequently passages are really prayers. Ipurchased it on KIndle and then bought the hard copy.
