Wave 4 Is an Excellent "Start Your Own Business" Primer
Book Review: Network Marketing in the 21st CenturyBy Richard Poe"What is Network Marketing? It is a strategy for selling products whereby independent salesmen are permitted to recruit other salesmen and to draw commissions from the sales of theirrecruits." Richard PoeNetwork Marketing in the 21st Century is a thorough step-by-step guide to Multilevel Marketing. The author, Richard Poe, was the first to write about network marketing in a mainstream business publication. In May of 1990, he wrote an article for Success Magazine entitled, "Network Marketing: The Most Powerful Way to Reach Consumers in the `90s." His article did such an excellent job of defining and explaining Network Marketing that reprints were sought after for more than ten years. Poe explains that in 1993, the National Center for Super Computing released the Mosaic browser. This made the internet accessible to everyone. Online shopping doubled between 1997 and 1998 from three to seven billion. Network Marketing emerged during the 1990s as one of the powerful new engines driving the 21st Century economy.According to Poe, MLM has occurred in four Waves: Wave 1 (1945-1979) - The Underground phase, Wave 2 (1980- 1989) - The Proliferation Phase, Wave 3 (1990-1999) - The Mass Market Phase and Wave 4 (2000 and Beyond) - The Universal Phase. Some people remain suspicious of MLM, afraid that it is a pyramid or `get rich quick' scheme, but he explains that the MLM Distribution system has been tested in court and is legally sound. In 1979, The Federal Trade Commission ruled that Amway Corporation, and therefore all network marketing companies in general, was a legitimate business, not a pyramid scheme. (P. 31)Poe does a wonderful job of giving the history of MLM with vivid illustrations. He gives detailed background on people who lost their traditional jobs and grow their MLM business from the ground up. He also gives suggestions about how to find an MLM of your own to work with. However, the book tends to ramble from topic to topic. It is all very interesting background information, but the reader may wonder where he is going with his point. Perhaps a better chapter overview would have been helpful. On the whole, however, I found this to be a very informative, instructive book for the casual reader as well as the individual who is looking for step-by-step instruction, and motivation for starting their own business.

Didn't choose to surf the wave!
For those pursuing the MLM approach to business opportunities, the book predicts the future. Personally, after learning what it was all about, I decided on a different career, so I couldn't test Richard's insights.

You have to work
This book clearly spells out how the distribution industry is changing, which is network marketing. Network marketing is simply a distribution channel from the manufacturer to the consumer. WalMart and Amazon are excellent examples of this. Have you ever recommended a good restaurant to a friend? You're a network marketer and the restaurant just gained a new client without advertising. Where people go wrong and then share their 'bad' experience is that they don't WORK. One can't just register with a company, occasionally discuss it, wimp around and not do the work. In my 6 years of successful experience, I have found that those who 'fail' didn't do the work and quit. If you fail to show up for your job, you'll lose your job. My only reason for rating this 4 stars is that some of it is written in language/concepts that are hard to grasp by those who have never been in network marketing. Have an open mind and you'll see the Network Marketing profession as a profession!
