DCC Projects & Applications

See my review of Polsgrove's Basic DCC Wiring For Your Model Railroad. This book is a worthy companion to that book. This book is also beautifully illustrated so the modeler has a good idea about what is under the covers of locos, command stations, boosters, decoders and the like. If a modeler does anything at all with a new DCC layout this book will be an invaluable guide. Buying a loco without lights and sound will inevitably lead to a decision to add them if it is possible. This book will show how. At this point, I must warn that not every book will contain everything a modeler needs. Success will depend on common sense, inventiveness, using the resources of a local train club, a couple of good sites on the internet, a local dealer, patience and care. But, the results are utterly worth it. Aside from these two books if you are going to use any Loconet cabling at all, do it right, spend the bucks and get a good crimper. Home depot sells Klein Tools Ratcheting Modular Crimper/Stripper at about $30. The instructions are dense -- it took me ten practice tries and about 10" of 1" cable strips but the cable (and I'm sure successive ones) will work the first time and it shouldn't take longer than a minute or two to make.

This book has a sticker price of $19.95 but it's definitely not worth the money. Almost everything in it has been published in magazines such as "Model Railroader" recently. The rest is easily found on DCC manufacturers web sites. In short, there's absolutely nothing new in here. Many of the illustrations seem to be added just to pad the book at take up space. They don't contribute to understanding the subject. (Even the "receiver locations" illustration on the cover is wrong, there's absolutely no need for the 'optional repeater locations'.

I am in the starting stage of building a ho layout and want to use DCC decoders to help run the train. This book has valuable insight as to how that can be accomplished.

To get a full view of the DCC system one must purchase a number of these books as there is a little in this one and a little in that and more in the next, and so forth. Each of the series has a lot of repetetion to wade through before getting to the unique portions of each offering.

Great introductory to a little more advanced book with good presentation and pictures and figures. Found it very good getting me into the basic to intermediate technology

It is a a good book , I was hoping for a little more advanced DCC projects.

Had easy to follow and understand articles and great pictures to help me with my own DCC system DCC Projects & Applications

I found this book useful both as an introduction to the subject of DCC and as a source of technical hints and tips. It covers a range of topics including lighting and sound decoders as well as the more basic motion command decoders.The only negative comment I would make is that it could have included more details and examples of fitting decoders to the many different motor/chassis combinations produced by different manufacturers. All in all I think it represents value for money especially if , like me, one is new to DCC.

Rather a lot of woffle and not much decent content.I can't gain-say anything in the book, but I did not find it did very much to help me understand the subject, and the examples given were of little use for non-US modellers
