Once fitted the tap is levered forward and backwards for on/off and then also left or right for hot/cold. However, the tap body itself was fine, so it occurred to look for a replacement handle. This was the right size and was easy enough to fit, it did not require the water to be turned off. The process of fitting involved removing a button from the rear of the old tap, using an Allen key to loosen it, removing the old tap handle, putting the new tap handle on, tightening it onto the lever via Allen key and putting on the included button.
