As a physician and a medical informaticist, I find this book very useful. The demonstrations using datasets from major medical databases like NIS, Medpar, MEPS are worth learning. I have used some of these databases for my previous studies. Also, I like the description of tools and techniques used for data-mining and text mining. This will help in doing more investigations using datasets from health care providers to check the quality and totality of care delivered. This book also provides some meaningful suggestions if you want to investigate the relationship between patient treatment for a chronic disease and the need for the patient to have emergency and inpatient care. Predictive modeling and Analytics are my favorite topics and this book has provided me with more information. In this era of over-treatment and over-diagnosis, a little knowledge of these techniques is essential for all health care providers to perform self-assessment also.Of course, some crucial updates are needed in some chapters, and a few more case studies, but, overall I recommend this as a source of reference.
