True Grit
I love reading everything mountain climbing, especially adventure/misadventure/disaster/survival. I would say this book is a perfect mix of all of the above. Lincoln Hall is honest, insightful, a masterful writer, a family man, and a truly miraculous survivor.Lincoln and his family visited Kathmandu/Everest base camp a year before this climb. Lincoln had come close to summiting Everest 22 years prior to this expedition. He had climbed in this region extensively, summiting several nearby peaks. He and his family had a deep respect for the Sherpa's, and were close friends with one sherpa and his wife. That made it all the more appalling when two of his "rescue" sherpas beat him, abused him, cut a fixed rope, taunted him, and caused him to fear greatly for his life during the arduous climb down from his death perch. Something that bothered me greatly about this book is that he never named the two thugs. I wonder how many other climbers were abused in a similar way by these despicable men? I wish Lincoln's wife or sons would make two additions to this book:1. Name the two criminal sherpas2. Add images to this bookLincoln was a photographer, yet this book does not contain one image. His descriptions are so masterful that the reader is able to form images in his/her mind, but how great would it be to update this book and fill it with Lincoln's own photographs?I am very saddened to learn that Lincoln passed of cancer. I hope his family is doing well and I wish them the best.

An inspirational read
Lincoln Hall's climb on Everest was supposed to be in support of a young Australian's attempt to be the youngest ever climber to reach the summit. When he was forced back, Hall took the opportunity for one last go at reaching the summit himself. In a year where a dozen climbers died on the mountain, Lincoln Hall was also left for dead just below the peak of Everest as night fell. And he had thought scaling Everest was going to be the real challenge! In this account, Hall speaks in real terms of his battle with his mind and body to get through the night on Everest- something that no-one else had done. A revealing tale of the human body's ability to overcome adversity and to come back from the warm comforting reach of death, the strength of a family's love and the connection with the natural world. This book is truly an inspiration read.

One of the best in the genre.
I love anything Everest. Mr Hall is a really good writer. He is insightful and honest and I enjoyed this book immensely. That he survived is a miracle and he saw the very negative side of Everest, including the despicable behavior of some on the mountain. I was so sad to hear that Mr Hall passed away from Cancer in 2012. He had a great live of life, much courage and a ton of love for his family. RIP Lincoln. I recommend this to anyone interested in stories of survival, the outdoors and mountaineering. This is one of the best books I've come across in this genre.

Zen and the Art of Mountaineering...
All around good read maybe drags a little at times. Probably the most interesting part for me is his bizarre interactions with the Sherpas. It's cool how he really integrated Buddhism with climbing and wasn't just another crass narcissistic tourist. I have to say I had this sense that there was some sort of big elephant in the room issue in this guy's life which was never discussed and which he took to his grave, like there's a missing blank not filled in here, a mystery that motivated his quest that somehow can't be discussed. A missing piece that was the reason he ultimately chose to go back to the spirit world early in life.

Amazing story
I've read other Everest stories. But this one was the best. Was clear what was happening all along. Truly amazing story.

incredible
I have read, and have loved, many Everest books. This one is one of my, if not the very, favorites in the stack. Lincoln's incredible tale is infused with warmth, great humour and abundant feeling. We really feel as if we have crawled into his imperfect skin and are experiencing this life journey with him. An Everest climb is beyond me at this point in my life but that's okay, because I have already done it -- via this book. It's that good. Bless your soul, Mr. Hall, wherever it may be, and thank you for this offering.

Fascinating
I am a rocking chair mountaineer. I just love a good book about Everest or other 8000s. This book is well written and you could feel the author s emotions at every step. Here and there you could feel his pride and a bit of ego coming up but this may be a commun thing for a high achiever.

Moving story, very good read
Having read already several books about the infamous Everest 2006 season, I was looking forward to this one. It sure didn't disappoint. Was moved allmost to tears when the family and friends at home got the word that Lincoln had survived after all.Was shocked to find out (afterwards) via Wikipedia that Lincoln died last year. I really wish Lincoln & Barbara would have had the chance to grow old together...
