Philips SPA8210/37 Multimedia Speakers 2.0 (Black)

I have had these speakers for a couple of days now and I am very impressed. They provide what to my ears is "natural" sound. The highs, mids, and bass are well balanced without any one frequency overwhelming the mix. These are NOT bass heavy speakers. Don't misunderstand, the bass IS there, but in proper proportion. I credit the WOOX passive radiator for this. Although passive radiator speakers are technically classified as "bass reflex" they are sealed, there is no bass port like on a typical bass reflex design. That bass port is often poorly designed, often intentionally, resulting in over emphasized bass. I know some people like this. If you are one of those people don't buy this speaker. These are properly engineered speakers with a passive radiator design more akin to an acoustic suspension speaker (to my ear the proper design for a speaker). One reviewer complained that these weren't loud enough for their power rating. I understand his point but respectfully disagree. Again this is due to the passive radiator design. All things being equal a passive radiator design will have a lower efficiency than a bass reflex design, (acoustic suspension even less so), but the payoff is in more accurate sound reproduction. They do get loud, but not blow out the windows loud. They will fill a typical living room with sound just fine, easily overpowering conversation. These speakers are also beautiful to look at. I'm really surprised they haven't gained any traction in the marketplace. There are almost no reviews for them on the internet, nobody sells them, they seem to have be consigned to the cut-out bin. I paid $45 for them, that is a tremendous bargain. They easily outperform many higher priced speakers. My only concern is how they are going to hold up over time. I hope they prove reliable because I want to listen to them for a long, long time.

I'm not going to get into some kind of audiophile nitpicking of $26 speakers. I use a computer in my dining area to play mp3s and stream music & podcasts in my kitchen & living room. I want it to sound good, but I'm not willing to spend on overpriced speakers like Bose or something. My old Altec Lansing setup with a subwoofer got slightly blown, so I looked for a replacement and decided to give these a try. I wanted something simple with decent power. I think these speakers are pretty natural/neutral sounding - many people want pronounced bass - which to my ear usually makes music sound unbalanced and artificial. I think these speakers handle bass very well without hitting you over the head with it, and they handle subtleties much better than the old subwoofer did, IMO. Listening to Bill Evans, for example, the acoustic bass comes through loud and clear and is more present in the mix than my old setup. I haven't really pushed the volume to the limits on these - I tend to listen at moderate levels, sometimes pretty loud. They have plenty of power for my needs and sound very good. I do use DFX - an EQ program - on my computer for slight adjustments, but I've always done that regardless of what speakers I'm using (and you should use external EQ too). I listen to everything from classic rock to jazz to old blues to hip hop to indie rock to Americana to reggae/dub/ska. These speakers handle everything very well and I'm very happy - no complaints at all. For their price point they fully deserve five stars.

It seems to work great as a desktop speaker to reproduce audio perfectly. Not meant to produce bass heavy music. Few things that I dislike about this are: 1. Too big. How can a speaker be so big! I mean for the sound it produces, it could be produced from a way smaller speaker. 2. Auto power saver mode gets activated in like a minute. While doing coding and stuff, I like to hear system sounds, but alas I can mostly not hear them because by the time the speaker wakes up, they are over! 3. No bluetooth. The speakers are not bad themselves. It's just that you can get so much more out there in a smaller package. The price was also just ok.

Great sounding speakers. I use these mainly for YouTube and Music, I also have used this with my Nintendo Switch. I love the sound quality out of these speakers especially since these were only 20 dollars. My only concern is with the 3.5 mm cable that is not removable is kinda flimsy and like any non-removable cable has the potential of internal wire breaks, good thing this has the 3.5 mm aux port in the front just in case I ever need it.

These computer speakers are a bargain for the price but are picky when it comes to reproducing the low end. I bought them advertised as NEW but they are used so maybe that is the reason why i have this issue. The speakers produce distortions in songs with a lot of bass. This is noticeable if you are less than three feet away from them and at high volume. If you like lots of bass then the Creative T12 is a better option, although they sound a lot less natural (sharp V shaped eq on them). As for the mids and highs this is where these speaker shine. They produce very natural and pleasing sound within all genres of music. If you compare only the mids and highs, these speakers can easily be placed next to a pair of Mackie CR3s (the bass is out of the equation because the CR3s have wooden large boxes compared to these). I am giving them 5 stars because they are better than expected for my application. I would definitely buy these again over other products that are twice the price.

I have removed my original review text to re-review these speakers after spending a decent amount of time with them, and listening to other products over many months. Design: I think the design looks fine. The black glossy plastic is going to be a fingerprint magnet though, but that's assuming you touch the speaker on occasion. The speaker features a woofer on the top, a tweeter in the middle, and a passive radiator at the bottom. With a headphone jack, aux in, and volume nob across the bottom. The rubber feet on the bottom could have been a little more hefty, as if they're not seated right, they may move around during high volumes. For those who care, the volume knob does not have a marking on it to indicate where it's positioned. I placed a small piece of tape on it to have a reference of where it was pointed. The headphone/aux jacks are also a bit difficult to use, as they require a bit more force than should be necessary to use them, which may be because of the poor QC(if you for some reason use them, but I'd suggest not to for reasons below). Sound: Compared to other things in this price range(assuming the very low price of this speaker around the time of the review, not the MSRP), it probably sounds better than most of them, but to say that this speaker is neutral is not very accurate. The speaker is not neutral, but it's not as awfully un-natural as some other speakers in this category, ESPECIALLY AT THIS PRICE. The speaker has a number of peaks in the upper mids and treble, and the upper treble runs hot. The bass is also boosted in the upper ranges, but has poor extension as well. The sound overall sounds a little thin, hollow, and sometimes shrill/peaky, with a bit of mud from the bass. In some songs, some notes in the treble range are a too much. I lastly wanted to mention that the bass doesn't play cleanly. The speakers have some kind of weird DSP or something in them. The tone changes drastically based on the volume knob position, which makes equalizing them difficult. At low volumes, they aren't very listenable, as they're just a bit un-intelligible and tinny. At mid volumes, they start to sound 'ok', and at higher volumes(shortly after the mid-way point) their tone becomes a mess. It's not very often that you will be using anywhere near max volume though, because the speakers start to distort. If you want these to play 'cleaner' at higher volumes, you can turn the knob all the way to max, and lower your device volume instead to an equivalent volume as some lower volumes. If you find yourself deciding to use the headphone jack(I suggest to not use it on any of these kinds of speakers unless you have to), the headphone jack seems to have a built-in low-frequency cut off built into it, so the lows will be rolled off while using it in the sub-bass frequencies. Quality Control/Other Thoughts: The quality control on these speakers are atrocious. One of the pairs is having the worst of it. One of my units came shipped with a slightly more enlarged than normal case gap between the two parts of the case. This results in air coming out of the side during bass, with the passive radiator only getting a portion of it. I tried pushing it in to see if I could get it to pop in, with no luck. That speaker also has the front silver piece coming unglued, and is pulling up from the bottom sides. Both speakers don't even match each other in sound when checking both channels separately. The 'better' speaker of the two in regards to QC, has an incredibly tinny/treble heavy and dull sound to it, while the more broken speaker is closer to neutral, but a little boosted in some areas. Edit: The silver front cover began to peel off the speaker, so I ended up just ripping the rest of it off, since it was bending up too much. Under the front silver cover, there are 6 screw holes, that are a bit difficult to get to. I assume this is how you remove the front portion of it, to open it up. I had also realized that due to the poor QC on one of the speakers(with the case gap), that one of the screw holes was sort of acting as a bass port, allowing air to escape through these holes once I removed the silver cover. Overall, for the price they're probably ok, but they're definitely are not perfect. If your set of speakers come with any sort of issues, please return them, as they are a sign of lots of bad quality control to come. Note: For the people complaining about the audio shutting off, make sure you have your device's(phone, computer, etc.) volume set to max, and control the volume through the speaker.

Great sound for book shelf speakers. My TV died and I was unemployed. I wanted to use my Dell monitor with my Roku and needed speakers. These were the right price. I was able to connect the speakers to the monitor. The Roku doesn't have an AC jack. The sound is amazing. You can't tell my monitor isn't a TV and I don't have to lose laptop just so I have speakers. Amazing purchase. Try them. You will not be disappointed.

Don't expect crazy hi-fi from these things. Compared to similar things I've owned in this price range, though, they put out quite a bit of sound. The audio quality is pretty good (my primary focus is on spoken word, so I can't say too much about bass response). Be aware that these are quite a bit bigger than most, so if desk space is at a premium, you might want to find another option. for me, though, it wasn't a problem. Honestly these are a great option if you don't want to spend too much on a larger computer setup

Great sound, stellar look and at an amazing price

Very good desktop speakers for the power that it gives you. This was a much better option that purchasing the 5 unit speaker systems as you would have to look for space to keep the sub woofer. These two units are decent, look good. The volume knob too has a ring LED making it easier to locate it in the dark or dimly lit rooms.

At this price, I would consider these speakers at the borderline of a premium priced product. What does this mean? The unboxing experience should be better than normal. The product itself should excel, and I should love having them on display as well as using at a regular basis. Sadly, only one of these boxes are checked, and its the least important one to me. They look really, Really nice on my desk. Sound quality: Pretty good. Not great. better than OK. The bass is a bit muddy and lacking, the mids/vocal range is good and the treble is clear but doesn't quite get as high or as vibrant as I'd like. Thankfully the treble isn't over the top or harsh, its a pretty smooth sound. I wasn't expecting crazy amounts of bass, but I think its "reflex" speaker design (the bottom cone doesn't have a driver, it just moves in and out with the pressure generated by the top woofer) it actually robs a bit of the low end from this setup. Distortion doesn't occur until you're above 80% volume, but up to that level, its powerful enough small/medium sized room with enjoyable, clear music, but you're not going to be sitting in front of these for the listening experience, or breaking them out at a big party. They're computer speakers, and they're really designed to be used in front of you for individual or smaller room listening. The Astetics: These look sharp. I love the way the woofer and tweeter looks, and the gimmicky reflex woofer too. THe volume nob provides even resistance and has a nice feel to it. Construction is 100% plastic. They're adequately weighted, they don't rattle or have any air leaks and they're solid enough. The open woofer design looks nice, however those with children should be aware of wandering hands - One poke and your silk tweeter is done for. Unboxing was the worst part of this. The box is adequate itself, but the cables are loose on top of cardboard spacers. Lift up the top spacer/speaker holder and you're greeted with a speaker wrapped in a foam bag. When I unwrapped the speaker, there was dust, wood and particles all over the woofers. There is protective coating on all the (Plentiful) glossy black plastic sides of the speakers, but it only covered about 2/3rds of it. Before it was even on my desk there were fingerprints everywhere. The packaging needs a LOT of work. Cost cutting measures reign supreme, which won't bug too many people, but I had to delicately use compresed air to try and clean out the debris from my brand new speakers, which was rather annoying. Functionality: These are straight up speakers. they use a Headphone jack to connect to your computer. No bluetooth. No wireless, the only feature is an aux port to plug in your phone. (unless you have a new iPhone, I guess) The left speaker connects via a hardwired RCA cable that is built into the right speaker. Having this be removable would have allowed users to better cable manage. The good news is you can extend this cable with an RCA extension cable. The bad news is: this isn't very thick wire. The power adapter is 18volts @1amp, which means at most these speakers are supplied with 18 watts of power. (peak can go higher, but any RMS ratings above 18 watts are bogus... More like 15 watts after efficiency is factored in. Bottom line is, I love the look, the sound is decent, the unboxing (which only lasts a few minutes) was poor. I'm keeping these speakers, but I kind of regret not spending 30 dollars more on the Bose Companion speakers instead. I cut costs, and so did Philips, so It truly is "you get what you pay for" Although I am a Vine Reviewer, I bought these speakers for my own personal usage. However, if you found this review helpful... I really like "helpful" votes down below, it lets me know I'm doing something right and my time isn't wasted. :-)
