You can measure it when it is cold but then don't be surprised that the reading may be off or very inconsistent! The problem with those metal tip thermometers is that they get cold. When you place such a cold metal under your arm, what it does first, it cools the surroundings by enough to give you inaccurate reading! Therefore before placing it under your arm, do warm it up gently holding the metal tip between your two fingers or in the palm of your hand and once it is nice and warm, THEN TURN IT ON! and put under your arm or wherever you intend to take reading! If you follow this simple tip you will have very consistent readings each time and this will be actual temperature of your body. Otherwise you can get lower reading by more then one degree depending how cold the tip of the thermometer initially was! Alternatively the other option is if you don't want to "prewarm" it you can just measure your temperature few times like five or more and then you will see that the initial temperature was lower and then each subsequent will be higher until it will level and then each reading will be the same. While this usually does not matter if your room was very warm and you have normal temperature, this can be very frustrating if you started with cold temperature tip and you had a fever but the unit does not show it and shows your temp as normal. This simple warm up step helps you to avoid any such frustration with any thermometers out there. This is what a retired and very experienced nurse suggested when I shared some frustrations with taking temperature some years ago. (BTW.,.. She said, the same rule applies to the oxymeters, warm up the device, warm up your finger! to get consistent accurate reading.) WHY I LOVE THIS THEROMETER: = CONSISTENCY! **Q: Why so many negative reviews?**
A: I noticed that too. We have this exact thermometer and at first we really liked it and believed it was accurate. However, my daughter had a fever once and 2 other thermometers we had said 100.4 F and 100.6 F and the Vicks SpeedRead said 98.1 F. So, I don’t think it’s very accurate. Unreliable!

**Q: When it says low on it does this indicates the battery is low?**
A: It's amazing how many people make this comment and it's not true. A little bit of reading or a simple search shows it's the air temp and not battery condition. Press at the On button. When the self-test is done in a couple seconds, display says "Lo." Stick it under your tongue and you bet a beep in 6-7 seconds with y9ur temp.

**Q: I used 3 & the others were .2 degrees apart, this read 1 degree higher. Does it read  high?**
A: If you are getting a reading that is a full 1 degree different from THREE others, I'd say return it.  Get another brand. 

Can't tell if mine was high or low, mine was  in the ballpark but a little inconsistent.  Took my temperature 3 times in about 2 minutes. Got readings of 98.0, 97.7, 97.8,  This is "close enough" but I'd expected better.  FYI My temperature is always in the 97+ range so that is not the issue.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best Digital Thermometer I've ever had

I've had the opportunity to use this for a few years now, and it continues to be the best unit I've ever purchased. Fast (unbelievably so, a few seconds), accurate (matches doctor's office results), and very easy to use... plus I haven't had to replace the battery since I got it a few years ago! Most of the other thermometers I've tried are few or none of the above... some I returned, some trashed, some just thrown in the ol' junk drawer. Virtually every one of the lesser ones are designed and made in China; this is designed in the US and made in Vietnam. I don't know if it's the design, the manufacturer, or the quality of materials, but this thing performs 100% of the time. If I ever replace it, I will only get another one of these, end of story :)
