Ahmed Abdul-Malik blends together percussion, bass, and oud with some soulful solo work from Seldon Powell on tenor and flute, and Ray Nance on cornet stretching out over long tracks with an exotic vibe. An overlooked gem!
I’d seen Abdul-Malik’s name before, probably on Monk albums, but Ray Nance is the only musician here I had really listened to carefully before I heard this. He sounds great here--as does everyone else. The most immediately noticeable thing about the music (from 1964) is how nicely it swings and how appealing the overall sound is. This type of jazz doesn’t drive anyone from the room. It can fade into the background but every now and then it draws you back in and you realize that it is unusually right and good. The musicians sound relaxed and confident and (even if you haven’t heard of most of them) like guys who would get the first call. There is a bit of a Middle Eastern vibe (and a guest oud player on a few tracks) but nothing heavy-handed. I recommend this one.

1.Spellbound2.Never on Sunday3.Body and Soul4.Song of Delilah5.Cinema Bluesセロニアス・モンクのレギュラーベーシストだったアブドゥル・マリクの1965年発表の六枚目にして最後のリーダーアルバム。
