This Spanish DVD - Does Justice to This Very Good Film (see my screenshots)
This is an excellent glossy Cinemascope Technicolor romantic film, as well as being one of director Douglas Sirk's very best films. Reminiscent of the film "Summertime", even if it's not quite as good as that classic, this film still has a lot going for it - the lovely scenery of Saltzburg and Munich and the surrounding countryside, and many fantastic interiors too. I've included a couple of screenshots to show you this Spanish DVD is a good print, and one that it displays the film in its proper 1: 2.35 widescreen aspect (that latter is very important for a film that looks as good as this one). This is a DVD well worth owning because even when it is shown on TV (which is only rarely), often enough it won't be in its correct full widescreen aspect. So with this Spanish DVD, just choose English, and I'm sure you'll agree with me that it looks and sounds excellent, good enough it would take a Blu-ray release to beat it and I think we can be fairly certain that's not going to happen, sadly! There are no subtitles you can't get rid of or any difficulties at all. WHAT a brilliant, brilliant film!

An oddity...
A fabulous print of one of Sirk’s weakest films that even he didn’t rate. Beautiful scenery, a great score, and fabulous settings don’t make up for a weak script and two leading players who fail to engage you in their dilemma. Watchable, but lacking the director’s normal visceral power - although I have read a newspaper review saying it’s really a critique of post-war Germany, which makes it rather more interesting. In fact, the German characters lack of true humanity is fascinating, but not sufficiently so to make the film really work.

Great lesser-known Sirk
Another terrific Sirk movie, not one of the famous ones. Beautiful colour, stagy settings, slightly wooden performances, many car journeys, creaky ridiculous conventional plot sent up. The mix is all there.Only the German dialogue is subtitled in Spanish, otherwise it's all English.
