Great translation, amazing they could bring Hugo's images to English so beautifully. Rare to find such awesome translations of French poetry. Wish they would translate his complete works.

A work of art! A powerful translation of Victor Hugo's work at the peak of his powers. There are also dramatic examples of his power as a painter. A beautifully edited book in a bilingual edition which has the French and English words facing each other. Excellent Forward and Introduction.

The book's is meticulously thorough in Hugo translations, including a wonderful forward and an excellent introduction. The author, R.G. Skinner, helps the reader appreciate the genius of Victor Hugo's writing and visions.The format of the book, French on one side, and English on the other, is an easy welcomed way to read the translations.I appreciate that I can rely on Skinner's sensitive interpretations of Victor Hugo's writing that exemplifies a language of profound imagery to capture and overwhelm the senses, and at the same time, the intellect. “Do you wish for us to rest our eyes on the unforeseen – And to watch nature up close – While she gives birth in the immense half light?” “Do you wish to see ten suns, twenty, sixty – Rising at once in sixty universes?”I think this would be a great suggestion for a book club. It would certainly bring intense and inspirational discussions of prose poetry that is rich in images, as well as, the subject matter, God and evil.Reading this book has been a deeply enriching experience for me. This book is way beyond 5 stars. I strongly recommend it.

Any lover of literature will be delighted by this exquisite book. Victor Hugo has earned his place in history, so there's the thrill of reading his poems unpublished until this collection. Foremost for me, because I'm not fluent enough in French to fully understand the original, is the special treat of relishing R.G. Skinner's translations. Skinner captures the full meaning of Hugo's words while also assuring a lyrically poetic read.Pulling an example at random, the first few lines of "The Triumphal Procession" on page 249: "Thus sang, before the luminous sky, / The boy and girl, by turns / Those children from Bethphage..."Or from "The Voices," top of page 55: "And an entire dead world folded like a fabric, / With its flowers, its field, its wooded or bare rocks, / And its teeming of strange monsters..."Read those examples aloud and you'll hear the lovely rhythm of this historical collaboration between Victor Hugo and R.G. Skinner.

Bought to read on my kindle not on my computer.. too expensive for what I got.. it is only worth buying the book because this only works on the kindle for PC and even on the PC it is about as useful as a pdf file. The most money I've wasted in a single purchase

Horrible format and impossible to read. It is a shame to sell a book in this condition. Do not recommend at all.
