ACADEMY1:72 - SB2C-4 USN Operation Iceberg

Great kit.

I’ve been building models off and on for over 60 years. I’ve built semi-professionally, and have earned many IPMS awards and recognition. I now build for museum displays as a member of a model building club. I can attest that this is probably the most accurate and best fitting 1/72 model of the SB2C-4 Helldiver, and yes I’m familiar with the Airfix/MPC, Lindberg, Revell, and Cybermodel/Dragon brands, (and the two 1/48 offerings by Monogram/Pro-Modeler), having built all of them over the years. If you’re looking for a Helldiver in small scale, this is the one you want. But be aware this particular version of this excellent Academy kit has the Photo Etch (PE) dive brakes of the later SB2C-4 in the kit (you can build it without using these if desired). These PE dive brakes add an extra dimension of detail, but are not really for beginning modelers. Also be aware there are differences between the real SB2C aircraft themselves, and this particular boxing of this kit builds a late war (late 1944 to late 1945) SB2C-4 aircraft. It won’t build an early SB2C-1 to SB2C-3 aircraft (1943 to mid 1944) aircraft. It’s a very nice model kit, with several options such as an open canopy. I think it’s the best SB2C in the 1/72 or 1/48 market for detail and ease of assembly.

Great model of a more unusual subject. Fit good, minimal flash, good panel lines

SB2Cの1/72スケールですが、モールドも細かくディテールも良くできていると思います。エッチングパーツも素晴らしいです。塗装は３種類から選べ、デカールも細かく、貼るのは大変ですが完成するとかなりカッコいいです。説明書は韓国語と英語ですが、プラモデルをやっている人なら困ることは少ないと思います。

アカデミーはGSIクレオス以降まともな代理店が付かず、同社製品は割高な並行輸入品を買わなければ入手できない状態が長く続いていましたが、最近インターアライドという新しい代理店が付いたおかげで、手頃な価格で購入できる様になったのは有り難い限りです。キット自体は2005年頃に登場したもので、本製品はそれにエッチングパーツとカルトグラフデカールを付属させたバリエーションキットです。パーツ構成はレベルモノグラムの1/48キットをパクり…もとい、激しく参考にしたらしく、とってもクリソツ(死語)ですが、元ネタのキットが優秀なのでよく出来ており、パーツの篏合も良好なので組み立て易いキットです。このスケールのSB2Cは、サイバーホビー製の後発キットも存在しますが、サイバーホビー製はディテールなどの面では本製品を上回る部分もあるものの、垂直尾翼のオフセットを忘れている欠点(何気に致命的なミス)もあるので、スケールモデルとしての基本形はアカデミーが上だと思います。付属のダイブブレーキのエッチングパーツは、初心者には難易度の高い代物なので、自信がなければ使用しない方が無難でしょう。爆弾投下アームと着艦フックのパーツが曲者で、細い上にプラの質自体が脆い事も相まってとても折れやすいです。カウルフラップと爆弾倉扉は開状態がデフォルトなので、閉状態にするには改造が必要です。付属するマーキングは沖縄上陸作戦「アイスバーグ」に参加した、空母「ランドルフ」「バンカーヒル」「ヨークタウン(二代目)」搭載機の三種です。垂直尾翼と主翼に描かれた幾何学模様は、「Gシンボル」と呼ばれる所属空母を示す識別マークですが、前線では意外と分かりにくいと不評だったので、終戦間近の1945年7月27日には廃止されて、味気ないアルファベットの組み合わせに変更されています(終戦までGシンボルを使い続けた空母もあった)本製品は1/72スケールのヘルダイバーとしては、最もバランスも良く、お薦めできるキットだと思います。
