Geno: In Pursuit of Perfection

I think Auriemma is a good coach but it's clear that he craves power and I'm not sure how well that would work in a more collaborative workplace. He's only grandfathered into his position as UConn's head coach. He'd have to act more responsibly if he started in 2022. There are some good lessons in there, and terrific tales of the early days of building the program. But some of his advice needs to be taken with a grain of salt. the need for power and control seeth through the words and doesn't represent a well-rounded leader in today's world.

I really loved how personal and free Geno was in this book. He gave incredible insight in the life of being the head coach of the most prestigious women’s basketball team in the country. If you love Basketball this book is well worth your time and money.

Great insight to Coach Auriemma's life and motivations. I was one of the legions of Geno haters for many years, but the thing is, I LOVE women's basketball. Like him, or not, you cannot argue with the consistently great quality of excellent players, who play team ball, and TEAMS he turns out in his program. I took a hard look at my bias and changed my attitude about Geno and UCONN and realized: 1. Most of his players love him, and they actually know him, so what was my problem? 2. Yeah he as an attitude and is a smart a**, like a lot of East coast guys I've known and worked with, but you know what, you never have to worry about what they are saying behind your back, because they say it to your face and I get along with them really well because of it. 3. Because I love women's basketball I should love the guy that is consistently putting out the best players and teams in the women's college arena. He also motivates them to be, not just the best basketball players they can be, but the best people. When you look at the UCONN players in the WNBA, they are the consummate team players who make the players around them better and will do whatever they can to make te team successful.So now I love UCONN, Geno and Diana Taurasi. Read the book, he's really a great guy who cares immensely about his players and the people around him.

Auriemma is a JERK. The best thing about this book is he tells you that he, CD (his associate head coach), all his assistant coaches and most of all his players know he is a JERK. But even more important, he cares about his players like a parent or that uncle who will always be there when you need them to be does. He doesn't coddle, he doesn't kiss up to good, or even great players. He does sometimes treat players differently, but only because every single one of his players is an individual, but he demands that they play not as individuals, but as a team. He gets the best out of his players because he demands the best out of them and even more so out of himself. He is insecure and cocky. Doubtful and arrogant. A smooth talker and someone who regularly eats shoe leather. He is a real person who I would love my daughter to play for some day if she ever got the chance.

If you are a fan of UConn basketball, in particular, or women's basketball, in general, this is a very interesting book. Geno Auriemma talks about his childhood in Italy, how his background influences him today, his coaching philosophy and his time at Connecticut building a third-rate program into a national powerhouse. Only quibble - the book reads like a stream of consciousness narration from Geno (I'd guess he talked into a recorder for the book) and, as a result, the book can often jump from one thought to another and back within particular topics. Despite his frequent digressions, Geno is witty and well-spoken; a fun, easy read.

Great, intimate portrayal of a coach as well as a consummate father. Coach Aureima reminds me of a military father. His intensity is as prevalent as flash fire. Yet, his compassion is like an iceberg. Thoroughly enjoyed the details of the stories about his players. Equally enjoyed his depiction of the relationship with uconn vs Tenn and Geno vs Pat. Finally, as McMillan details the stories of the closeness he has with his players, this book leaves me with greater respect for Coach Geno and his players. Moreover, Bria Hartley said, through tears: "You made me the person I am today."

A must read if you are a basketball fan! Geno is among the best coaches in women's basketball and possibly one of the most criticized. His success is unrivalled and this book provides examples of why.

Another book is needed to follow up what happens after 2005 to current year. Hopefully another book will be available in the future.
