Media and Government Complicity concerning perpetuating ignorance on the subject
I would suspect that most who have read this book agree that the "company line" by government officials and feeble "explanations" by Project Blue Book , shuttered in 1969, are a sham and travesty. The fact that subsequent government official responses to inquiries by citizens who experienced personal UFO sightings, by continuing to refer to the findings of Bluebook as "gospel", are disgraceful and an insult to our intelligence.Stanford physicist Peter Sturrock authored a book several years ago questioning the work and findings in Bluebook, which in fact, proved to be a shallow and superficial investigation covered by a full time staff of "4". Dr Sturrock even conducted a symposium of scientists in 1997 in Tarrytown, NY. Most attendees were curious, skeptical but cautious in further pursuit on the topic because their sources of funding and professional reputations could be disrupted by breaking ranks with colleagues and peers.Besides the prior FOIA petitions initated by Greenewald and the documented information obtained... its now proven w/o a shadow of doubt that the government never stopped investigations of UFO's ...based upon the 12-17-17 news release by the NYT and Washington Post.I agree with Greenewald's conclusions in the final chapter of his book and I am appalled that the majority of mainstream science continue to display emphatic and dogmatic POV's concerning the subject by resorting to ridicule to those who dare question their authority. This simply re-inforces the "taboo"... and unfortunately the mainstream media quickly defer to the prominent scientists to "set the record straight" which, IMO, is a coordinated effort to put collective minds at ease. There may be a societal/ cultural fear of the unknown, as promulgated by some very informative writers on this subject. The work of investigative reporters like Leslie Kean and Lee Spiegal, the book by Robert Hastings, and the late Terry Hanson are noteworthy. Hansen recognized that the media and government have a history of working hand in hand and often times for good causes, as in World Wars 1 and 11. He further noted that the 1975 UFO incursions out west over nuclear weapons sites never made it into mainstream until several months later due to media complicity.Kean's reference to Hyneck's observations is significant..To wit:"There appears to be a powerful desire to do nothing" Greenewald is correct...... "we" are not an old civilization, when factoring in the age of the universe and the very liklihood that our knowledge of physics may be a million years behind other civilizations, whose abilities and behaviors may appear magical to our levels of understanding. I truly believe that world wide governments continue to cover up this topic, because they simply do not know the origin of the phenomena but are reluctant to inform their constituents that "they" do not have control over our soverign air space and are powerless to do anything about it. Most governments remain quiet with a few notable exceptions like France, Peru and Chile who publicly suspect the ETH as the reason for a small % of sightings. I still recall the Phoenix event in 3-97 and the O'Hare event in 11-06 where feeble explanations were released to the media by the military (flares in Phoenix) and United Airlines at O'Hare, who initially denied the incident oveer Gate C-17 even transpired.. until a transportation reporter for the Chicago Tribune filed a FOI, or right to know request. The airline and airport officials finally acknowledged the event and responded that it was a temperature inversion, which has been subsequently disproven.. Both times the media simply accepted the findings of those (supposedly)"in the know" and their feeble cover stories as explanations. .The Phoenix event never found its way into mainstream media until almost 3 months after the sighting..As always, a few weeks after news release of both the discussions simply retreated into the rear of cyberspace, which is... business as usual.... as if it never happened... and both events were simply relegated to the fringe.... It may take some dramatic event to get this subject into the mainstream, or in the alternative, we need responsible media to follow and cover the good scientific work currently being done by SCU in confirming and validating data objectivly obtained .. based upon the 2013 incident in Aguadilla, PR and the 2004 Nimitz encounter off the coast of San Diego.

Great info, just not a great book
Greenwald has always been tenacious at getting FOIA info and putting it up on his website. This book provides some of these "gotcha" moments of the government lying to us by showing the FOIA documents he's dug up that contradict public statements. The book however is a bit plain, the documents aren't exactly exciting, there's no "this base has the craft" or anything flamboyant, which may seem unfair to say, but there's not even really too much other than memos, reports, etc. It's also not really deep or insightful unless you are new to the subject. I didn't find the writing that great either--it's almost like he needs to partner up with another investigator or author to bring something more to the table with this subject, maybe to bounce off theories or opinions with. You have the documents, but now give us some interviews from living people--what's their reaction? Who is wowed, who doesn't find it shocking. This book isn't a bad read but it's not a page turner. Just solid steps forward.

A must read for fans and researchers of UFOs and related phenomenon
One thing I like about this author, whether listening to him on a program, reading his books, or browsing his website, is the fact that he calls ball and strikes. "Inside The Black Vault: The Government's UFO Secrets Revealed" doesn't disappoint. John showcases some of his hard work with a point of view that is refreshing, and what the field needs at this time. It will remain within my reach as I do research.

Has the intellectual depth of a watercress sandwich
I...I...me...I...my....myAn awful book where the author basks in the glory of his high school precociousness. The abstract: I submit FOIA requests. Not horrible, though, because most horrible books are better.

Not worth the time to read.
This book adds little to nothing to the subject of UFOs. I was looking for a much more in depth discussion and new information. This book would benefit greatly from good editing. One star is a stretch.

The Truth is out there
Inside the Black Vault is a fantastic read even though the subject matter & writing style is a bit dry at times and repetitive.John Greenwood has spent the last 20 years researching UFOs since the age of 15. He has used the FOI document request process to navigate the UFO cover up.This book is a thorough review of the UFO subject based on official US Government documents obtained under FOI requests. The official US government response is that all UFO sittings can be explained as a natural phenomenon and that they are a not a national security threat. The book shows the facts that after the closure of Project Blue book in 1969 the US Government continued to study UFOs and report cases to the highest levels in the US Government (e.g The White House). In particular, cases involving UFOs flying & hovering near nuclear weapons storage facilities /silos and nuclear power stations highlight a clear national security threat that this is not being covered up and not reported to the public.

Research at its best - straight from the most reliable sources
The government. This guy has done freedom of information requests (and similar) continuously since he was 15 years old. This is possibly the most accurate data in the public domain. For those such as myself who read a lot of this type of book, this is the holy grail. No hype or nonsense, just facts. This to be fair, can make for slightly difficult reading, but stay with it because there are facts and quite a few revelations here. I look forward to more from this author.

Just the facts
I have read a lot of UFO books over the years and way too many trade on circumstantial evidence, wild claims and downright fantasy. However, 'Inside the Black Vault' is as good as it gets. The author has spent many, many years delving into what the US government knows about UFOs via the Freedom of Information Act, so what he uncovers is actual evidence, actual documentation. The author dissects what he finds with forensic accuracy as he strives to get to the bottom of what the US government knows about UFOs. If you're new to the subject or skeptical of the UFO field, then this is a great starting point. Even if you've been into the subject for a long time, this book should act as a touchstone for good research and a handy reminder just how deeply buried the UFO subject is with the US government. I heartily recommend.

A Great Look at an Old Subject.
In a well-written and well-researched book on a topic such as UFOs/UAPs, this book does nothing but one thing very well, and that was providing a well documented intro, or refresher, for us more seasoned UFO believers. This is the book you could show your sceptical friends, and since there are absolutely no mentions of the subjects some of the even more fringe people, this would show them with the government's own words, that there is definitely something very tangible to the topic.Thank you for such a great piece of work.

UFO secrets
Information and technology that the world is unaware of and, moreover, doesn't seem to want to acknowledge, despite overwhelming evidence of what is either undisclosed advanced human technology or alien technology, or both.
