The dialogue is excellent. The tension created by the back and forth between Kyra and Tom is palpable. A great read and I really want to see it in a theatre.

Absolutely the best play. I've read it for 6 times at least. There're a lot of great monologues in it. And it has so many layers in it. It's about romantic relationship but most of all it's about politics. Just want to know why it's called Skylight despite the fact that it has something to do with Alice.

This book is filled with intensity and emotion! Very well written. However, I do wish there was a different ending but it was a lighthearted ending. Interesting. Would recommend!

Great writing, great cover photo, good condition. The play is nominated for 7 Tonys, so I feel I've read it at the perfect time, too. I've admired David Hare's writing since "Plenty".

One of the best plays ever. I'm sorry that I missed it--it only had a very limited run. But it was great to read.

I continued to think about it later.--That's always my test for a great play.

Not at all as great as the reviews make you believe it is. Good read if you have nothing else to do...

A beautifully written scrip and the book makes for the perfect gift

本年12月に新国立劇場で本作品の公演があるとのことで，邦訳版はなく，原文を読んでみました．作者のD.Hareという名前をどこかで見た覚えがあったのですが，J.Osborne: Look Back in AngerのFaber Modern Classics版にAfterwordを書いた方で，戯曲本文より読む時間がかかったのではないかと思うくらいに凝った文章で書かれていて，記憶に残っていました．　登場人物は庶民階級の出で，レストランから始めて今ではホテルまで経営している裕福なTom（50歳近い）と，その息子のEdward（18歳），中流階級のSolicitorの娘で大学の先生にもなれるとTomに言われているのですが，現在は貧しい地区の学校の先生をしていて，勉強の遅れている子供たちの面倒をみることに生きがいを感じているKyra（30歳を過ぎたばかり）の3人です．　本作品の初演は1995年で，会話にイングランドのPoll Tax（1990年実施，1993年廃止）が出てくるので，時は’90年代初頭です．舞台はLondonのはずれの治安のあまりよくない地区のKyraの安アパートのダイニング・キッチンです．　全102ページで，同じページ数の小説と比べると，戯曲の文章の量は一般にその3分の1かせいぜい半分くらいの感じなのですが，本作品は3分の2程度はありそうです．さらに，その始めの14ページと終りの6ページはEdwardが，その間の82ページはTomが相手なのですが，Kyraは出ずっぱりで，これだけの分量のせりふを覚えなければならないKyra役には同情したくなります．　ストーリーの骨子は以下のようです．Tomの経営するレストランのウエイトレス募集の張り紙を見て応募したKyraがTomと不倫の関係になるのですが，その関係がTomの妻のAliceの知るところとなり，3年前に別れます．そして，1年前にAliceが亡くなり，父親とうまくいかなくなったEdwardがKyraのアパートを訪ねてくるところから物語が始まります．その日Edwardが帰った後で，Tomが訪ねて来てKyraとの男と女の会話が一晩延々と続くのですが，一言で言えば，妻を亡くして寂しくてしようがないTomのKyraに帰ってきてほしいという思いと，恵まれない環境のなかでよい生徒を育てることを目標に生きているKyraの決意との埋めることのできない溝を描いているということになるでしょう．このままで終ってしまうと観客は疲れてしまうのですが，D.Hareは最後にEdwardを登場させて，少しほっとさせてくれるのが救いです．

The balance of power is the first dramatic aspect that compels, then it's the affection we have for Kyra, Edward, and Tom, affection that waxes and wanes variously until landing.I want to see this played, now.

Bought this to learn a monologue fo an audition for acting school. Book was slow in arriving but was straightforward to read etc
