The Solitary Masterpiece of Dr. Destouches
Was Celine a one-book wonder?VOYAGE had an enormous impact on French literature when it first appeared. Sartre and de Beauvoir said it was the book of the year and quoted from it regularly. Leon Trotsky, though not a first-class literary critic, had a first-class mind and he thought Celine was an extraordinary talent.VOYAGE was written before Celine discovered his elliptical style. The vernacular fragments interspersed with three dots first appeared in MORT A CREDIT and never subsequently disappeared as far as I know (I can't claim that I've read all of Celine). CREDIT is a good read, but it's not up to the level of VOYAGE, and the later novels that I've read (GUIGNOL'S BAND, CASTLE TO CASTLE, a few others) are far below the standard set by VOYAGE.And, of course, Celine's reputation was besmirched beyond redemption by his anti-Semitic pamphlets (BAGATELLES POUR UN MASSACRE, L'ECOLE POUR CADAVRES), though I admit I've never read them, only read about them. I do wonder if they have any literary value in spite of their horrible themes?VOYAGE is undoubtedly a masterpiece, a book that shocked and dazzled French literateurs, but I think Celine exhausted his muse after he wrote FIN to it.

A good read but not for beginners
I've read many books in French but this one was particularly difficult for some reason. I enjoyed this book but this is not a good book for a beginner. I was also a bit let down because I came into it with extremely high expectations. It's a good book and definitely worth the time to read. Just not amazing in my opinion, something about it just seems a bit dry.I read the English translation afterwards and man is it bad. Celine's writing style has a nice flow to it that doesn't translate well into English. The English version seems really choppy in comparison. If you can read it in French, read it in French.

For sheer glorious heartwarming misanthrophy, this is it!!
Not even finished and one of the greatest things I've read. The French is really tough even with a special dictionary that addresses his neologisms or slang or language of the streets. I guess he's tarred by his personal pathology and antisemitism, but it doesn't show up here and the writing just blazes.

he is among the GREAT. Very pleased with this edition
Finally, Céline in his native language! Trash the man if you so desire, but in terms of world literature, he is among the GREAT. Very pleased with this edition.

Powerful!
A French soldier's developing disgust and opposition for war reveal a most uncomplimentary picture of aging officers, ancient stereotypical rivalries, and the butcheries of World War I.

A PLEASURE FOR THE SPRIT
"Céline" was not a surprise. The author is one of my favourites and the book it's in excellent conditions. I would like to buy more books like that because we learn a lot. To finish I would say that "Céline" it's a pleasure for the sprit.

Eindringlich!
