Native North America (Civilization of the American Indian (Paperback))

This book would be useful perhaps as preparation for travel to the American West for someone who knew little about it and wanted short overviews of various topics. There is no narrative structure. Rather, it is organized by topic, with each topic covering about two pages. The book is called Native "North America," but it is almost exclusively focused on the Native people of what is now the United States, with very little about the indigenous groups of Canada and literally nothing about Mexico. Thus the book is not as comprehensive as the title indicates.

Many books about Native Americans tend to present Indians as if they no longer exist. When I wrote this trade volume for general audiences, I insisted that the coverage treat Indian cultures in both the past AND present. The publisher was very supportive and willing to print many full color photographs, all at a decent price. In its various formats the book is now in at least 14 languages and is used in several university courses. For what it's worth, I make no royalties on the volume. I do hope you enjoy it, but especially that you will learn something. About the 5 stars, what else could I say? :)

Lots of information, great pictures. (This is not a coffee-table book, it is small but very nicely done.) Definitely recommend to someone wanting to learn more about Native North Americans.

Great resource book. reasonable price.

I bought this book on sale at B&N, and gave me a chance to look through it before buying it. Although I mainly was going to buy The Shaman book, since I study shamanism for anything that could help evolve to spiritual as a clairsentient, I was also interested in Native American Spirituality and history. This book is awesome! It covers all that one would need to know without having to buy so many books just to get little information. It covers different tribes, areas, beliefs and practice, history of first people and conflict caused by whites, awesome photos, quality book, well up to date of present conflicts and progresses. This book is the only book for me, it covers all that I was seeking to know.

Great overall introduction to the indigeneous peoples of North America. Author succintly covers the basics. Have used this book in American Indian World Views class for a number of years as a required text. Cet ouvrage que j'avais consulté dans une boutique du Parc du Yellowstone, s'avère être, après quelques recherches en librairie, un des plus complets sur le sujet.De plus la structure et le découpage très explicites des chapitres, en facilitent la consultation pour qui ne veut en faire une lecture linéaire.Enfin le choix iconographique de l'illustration, complètent admirablement l'ouvrage sans le rendre simpliste ou vulgarisé.
