This device is to be used in conjunction with a desktop PC
or PC power supply. All spinning hard drives I'm aware of require two connections - data and power. This adapter supplies only the data connection. The power connection must come from another source. I don't have a loose hard drive to test this device right now - I'll amend this review if it doesn't function as advertised. The copy says the power supply is not included. Now readers know 'the rest of the story'.Edit: I attached this device to an old 10 GB. PATA drive with an Xubuntu install on it. Booted from the 10 GB drive and things worked as expected. It was slower than a SATA or PATA connection of course but was still quite usable. So Ops checked good! If I were planning to use this device much, I'd make an 'extension' with male & female Molex ends and SATA-Molex adapter.

Great Device!
This is the best low price HDD transfer tool! A lot of people complain about the lack of a power supply, but many of the kits that contain them are faulty and can cause failure of their hard drive, which is why I chose this one. All you need is an old power supply from your failed computer, unless that was the source of the failure. Luckily, the power supply that came out of my dead computer(motherboard failure), the power supply was not that old,and still good. All I had to do was connect a jumper wire from the green wire to the black wire on the ATX plug to make it work. Make sure that you have a drive or at least a fan connected to prevent the supply from shutting down. Then also make sure that the drive is spinning and stays on and then connect the USB on the back port of the computer. Then you can rescue your data. This is a very high quality unit and I would lose important data, music, pictures, and other items without it. A must have!

Does not work with all IDE devices
Device is not well suited to DVD drives. When the power cable and IDE connection sit close together. So an IDE extender will be needed and is not supplied with the device when this condition exists. Also, the DVD device was readable, but could not write any DVD/CD's even after the device firmware was updated. Attempted to use the device with a Maxtor 8GB drive, and even though it seemed the device was recognized, it was not able to present the device to the OS. So, I ended up putting the drive back in an external USB/IDE enclosure which works fine. This is not to say there will be an issue with every device, but my experience was less than stellar.Since I had/have no reason to use/purchase this device for SATA connected device, this feature was not tested.Since all the devices were to be mounted internally, the lack of power cable is not an issue and power comes from internal power supply.

Before this, I bought something similar to try to get data off of an old hard drive, which ended up not working at all. So when i bought this, I had doubts. It was a bit hard to use since i had to plug the USB into the outside of the computer and also have a power chord from inside the computer plugged into the hard drive, but once i got everything hooked up, it worked perfectly.

The product description is extremely misleading.
The product description is wrong, or, at best, misleading. What this device is designed to do is:connect a 3.5" IDE drive to a USB port (Need an external power connection)connect a 2.5" IDE drive to a USB portconnect a 3.5" IDE drive to an SATA data cable (I have not tested this functionality)connect a 2.5" IDE drive to an SATA data cable (I have not tested this functionality, where does the power come from? USB?)What it cannot do is:connect an SATA drive to a USB portSince I was looking for a device that allows a connection from an SATA drive to a USB port, this device is useless.

Worked as intended
Worked as intended. I had 5 left over HD's and with the new computer (sata only) had no way of checking/removing data. 2 of my drives were small ata/ide old laptop and this device just hooks up to them no power connection required. 3 of the others were 5.25" pata/ide and they needed power i just used the spare connection from the computer and powered them that way. I was able to pull all useful data from each of the drives and even found 1000 or so pictures that never made the transfer/recovery. :).

Awesome for the price
The indicator lights are very handy, good data transfer. The cord is a good length, but if you are going to use SATA, then you might want to try a different item unless you are going to buy/ already have the proper SATA cables.

Unfortunately it did not work for me.
I had several old IDE drives I wanted to read before throwing them out. I'd tried several different OSes (Windows 7, Linux & MAC OS) and several different computers with no luck. Windows recognized the adapter most of the time but would not give me access to the drives. Linux gave me access to the drive but saw no data. I eventually went with a $23 Bytecc which was recognized by all my computers and allowed me to quickly go though the old drives before throwing them out.For the price it may be worth a shot for you but for me it was a disappointment.
