Great receiver for the price!
I bought this unit to replace my 30 year old Marantz Amp. This unit sounds great; and it has enough inputs to accommodate my tape decks, XM Receiver, CD Player, and Digital Sound Processor. Even the FM portion works well, as well as my Dual Turntable. I can't say enough concerning how well this receiver serves my needs. I must commend Amazon on how quickly they handled my Replacement Claim. On the unit they sent me, the display portion did not work. Unfortunately, Amazon could not guarantee delivery of a new unit for several weeks; so purchased another unit from another dealer. I filled out the Amazon Replacement Form online and within two Business Days, Amazon had credited my account. Couldn't be happier with their service, and with my SR 4023.

A fine receiver for classical music and opera
I've been a classical and opera music lover since my childhood. Last week I was recovering from a surgery which gave me the opportunity to listen to a sample of my best recordings. It was then when I realized how unhappy I was with the pale sound output by my old receiver and I ordered the SR4023 (about which I read in the past). This receiver produces an extremely fine sound - especially for classical music and opera. The highs are exquisite and the bass is balanced. It may not be your type of receiver if you care about a lot of bass and its 'punch', but it will be your receiver if you care about finesse in the sound.

It was ending badly until....
Well, I really, really, really wanted to love this receiver, but, alas, it has let me down mightily. In the beginning there was flawless operation and terrific sound. This receiver worked well with it's companion Marantz CD player. The music flowed like wine. It was a romance. Perhaps I even fell in love. Sound can do that, particularly nice, sweet sound that provides a crisp analogue signal that makes each and every note ring like a bell.As quickly as my love affair with this receiver began, it ended--a shattered honeymoon of betrayal and angst. Just a year after purchase, the receiver began to malfunction, shrinking away from me by going into protect mode. A few resets and she would sing again, but not without an annoying, but subliminal, hum in one channel underneath music or dead silence. Finally she went fully into protect mode, never turning on again.Marantz customer service guided me to an authorized service center, and I sent my item, still under warranty, off to be fixed after paying $30 for shipping. Six weeks later she came back. Unfixed. She played for a day, and then she began her noisy retreats into protect mode once again. The repair shop was reticent, which is a polite word for "rude" if you want to know the truth. The machine is still dead, unable to play. Attempts to get resolution from Marantz have been unsuccessful. Valuable time is ticking away. My life is devoid of music. Liquor doesn't fill the void. I wish I could have a song. Any song. But alas, my Marantz has settled into a new life of being a $500 ornament to poor quality and customer service.I purchased Marantz in the first place because we had one when I was a kid. I inherited it eventually when I got a home of my own. The old Marantz played honorably for another 10 years. It must have been 30 when it finally died. That old box helped me discover Led Zepplin, the Doors, Janis Joplin, Little Feat, the sacrosanct wailings of every bluesman ever recorded. I was hoping my new box would continue with me on my journey of musical discovery. But alas, she died too young.Too bad.I cannot recommend this product. The heartbreak is too great.UPDATE: April 4, 2014:Like the old song that admonishes us to believe that fairy tales can come true, my relationship with this receiver has been rekindled by a bolt out of the blue. Almost as if by an answer to a desperate prayer, a Marantz customer-service representative contacted me from out of nowhere just as I was ready to kiss my sweet musical love goodbye forever. Will this unforeseen intervention save the day? We shall see.On the bright side, Marantz has arranged to bury the body of my old receiver at their expense and send a new one in its place. I can't imagine that this is standard procedure for Marantz or any other company for that matter, but it sure does set a lot of things back on the right track and almost completely erase the sting of betrayal I had felt earlier.Like a giddy teenager waiting for the father of his prom date to open the door and let him into a magical realm of romance, I stand at the porch waiting for the promised arrival of my new replacement receiver. I hope she will be every bit as sweet and wonderful as her predecessor, but with much better staying power.I guess in the mostly hard-edged world in which we live, fairy tales really can come true sometimes. A company sending a replacement outright is pretty much unheard of these days. And perhaps the lesson that corporations still can and do do the right thing sometimes is even sweeter than the strains of music that issue forth from quality hi-fi components. Well played, Marantz! Well played indeed.

No Balance Control
This receiver has no way to correct for speaker placement or room acoustics. There is neither balance control nor its audiophile equivalent, line control. If you do not happen to sit perfectly between the speakers in an acoustically perfect room, there is nothing you can do. I note the other glowing reviews, and I can only surmise that they enjoy the attributes noted above. Even without this disqualifying failing, the sound was nothing special, and the old Yamaha with no audiophile pretensions that this was to replace sounds far better, even before adjusting the balance. Product help was good when I reached them, although they only work weekdays 9 to 5. Their online help was of no value. Glad Amazon has such a liberal return policy.

No balance control? Huh?
Let's see.......500.00 bucks......and not even a balance control? What's wrong with that picture? Sure, that is OK if you are setting in the "sweet spot", but other than that.........not so much.

nice touch. The Marantz also came with one high ...
I have Bose 901 speakers and needed a “real” two channel receiver. This product line is essentially extinct will all the surround sound receivers being the rave. The Bose 901’s will nearly shatter your drywall. Love’m. But my older Sony two channel receiver died. So I started the hunt for the Marantz SR4023.I found one on Amazon. I placed an order from DigDom for the Marantz SR4023 Stereo Receiver (Discontinued by Manufacturer).Exact item came in only four days from placing the order using least expensive route. Remote had batteries, nice touch. The Marantz also came with one high quality cable for my CD player – perfect! I set up the Marantz immediately. All the features I tried worked perfectly. I would buy from DigDom again via Amazon!!!Paul

Packs the Punch
This little baby packs quite a punch. I had a Marantz receiver for years and it performed beautifully, so when I was searching recently Marantz was my first and really only choice. I have it only hooked up to my Martanz CD player so I only listen to CDs. The sound and the separation is great. It is so nice to hear a nice full, room filling sound with great highs, and lows. I have paired this with four Polk Si speakers and it is all I could ask for. Great sound not not a great amount of money. Marantz has been around for a long time for a reason, listen and you will know why.
