So Good
I’m not super far into the book yet but already so gripping. This author definitely is not someone to take lightly. It is a lot of disturbing Contant. But that is what I like reading. We have a book club at work and this came highly recommended from my coworker.

Fun read
I Enjoy the book although it gets a little predictable at the end. It was enough to make me want to read the next in the series.

The First Novel In The Grant County Series
When doctor Sara Linton goes to lunch that day, she never expected her life to change so dramatically. When she goes into the restroom, she finds a victim; a local chemist who is blind has been raped and slashed and left for dead. She is still alive but dies in Sara's arms as she tries to help.Chief of police Jeffrey Tolliver is faced with a sadistic killer. He is also Sara's ex-husband and there is plenty of tension left between them. Another conflict is that the victim is the twin sister of his top detective, Lena Adams. Lena already has issues being the only female in the small Georgia town police force and she is determined to be on the case although everyone knows it shouldn't be allowed.Clues are scarce and before Jeffrey makes much progress, the killer strikes again. This time he kidnaps a student from the local college and when she is found, two things become apparent. The killer is working through a religious framework and his main target is Sara. Sara has a background that already has a criminal in it. She was attacked in Atlanta years ago during her residency. Is this the same man or is someone new? This is the first novel in the Grant County series and an early book in the successful career of Karin Slaughter. The violence is graphic and the reader needs to be prepared for it. Along with the horrific crimes, there is tension between Sara and Jeffrey as they work on what their relationship should be post divorce. There are plenty of twists and turns and the reader will finish with a real appreciation for why Karin Slaughter is such a powerful force in the mystery genre. This book is recommended for mystery readers.

Great Way to Start
Every story has to start somewhere. This was a great start. You jump right into the lives of these characters. And Slaughter does a wonderful job of getting you hooked on them very quickly. You want to know why they are all mad at Jeffery when he seems like a good guy. You want to know what Sara is holding back. You are touched by her reactions and her feelings. You instantly understand you are not going to like Lena anymore than anyone else. There are some bad guys that are obvious and some that it takes you a while to decide on.I had a little bit of an advantage going into this series because I had read the Will Trent series first. I was new to Slaughter and didn't know that the two series were tied together. So I started at the beginning of one with the intent of reading the other after. I just picked the wrong one to start. So, I started with a little bit of knowledge about the relationship between Sara and Jeffery. Which, as it turned out, was not as clear cut as I had expected going into the first book based on my knowledge from the Will Trent series. The fact that they were divorced through me a little. But I have to say I was thrilled with how this book turned.Slaughter does a very good job of humanizing these characters. They could be your best friends, and you be privy to the ins and outs of their marriage. Or they could be the next door neighbors that you say hi to but don't really know what's going on behind closed doors. And now you are getting a look at the private lives; the feelings and struggles and the tragedies that make them who they are. It could be any one of us dealing with the same feelings and insecurities and heartache. Being able to identify with Sara and Jeffery makes them real to you as a reader. You either have had friends that have gone through what they are going through or you have experienced to some degree personally. So you get invested.I don't like to give plot or story away. So I won't. What I will say is that you will enjoy getting to know these characters -- even through their sometimes very real life. And we all know that real life is hard and messy. But don't read this book if you aren't ready to commit to seeing the series through to the end. I have read through to the end. While this is a great book, it is the beginning of the story. And you will miss out on a lot if you are just looking for a quick read that you have no intention of investing in.ENJOY!

Dark, graphic crime thriller
I have read all of Karin’s books from the original publication dates. Thought I would restart from the very beginning. Although it is now slightly dated in terms of technology, etc and in my head I was thinking ‘check for cctv or mobile data’ when they’re still using a fax, it is a gripping read. The story is compelling, it is also grisly and very shocking in places. It builds on the characters and from this book you see why some of them behave and act the way they do in later books.
