I bought this based on reviews. It replaces the DA-2 pedal that I have. I wasn't sure if it was similar or not. I actually prefer this one to that one. This will get you into metal territory if you push it with an overdrive. I have it paired with an OD-1X and it sounds great.

Does the job I need it to do. Tube amp went out. Had to use my solid state as a back up. Ran it clean and used this pedal. Sounded just grand!

Boss effect pedals are simply the best in terms of engineering and build quality. I have a fairly large collection of effect pedals, and at least half of them are overdrive or distortion. This one is REALLY good. A couple of considerations if you buy this one: This one is a different breed of cat. It has digital circuitry that gives it some special qualities: 1. Take the time to experiment with adjustments. It's different. It's very bright, and has very high gain, so the best sounds won't look like settings on a typical distortion like a DS-1. 2. Playing a Stratocaster, I'm getting the best sounds as follows: Gain: 10:00-12:00 (maybe lower with Humbuckers) Low: ~2:00 (boosted) High: ~9:30 (reduced) 3. This pedal has very high gain; If I get past 2:00, I hear a lot of digital noise. Gain of 10:00 - 12:00 is great. I get a few feedback squeals at this level. Hope this helps The results you get with all gain type effects (overdrive and distortion) will depend entirely on your guitar and amp. The DS-1X has the tones - just be patient and dial them in :-)

Not bad at all, especially if you use it with the right amp. I like OD-1X better - even for metal. This is the only reason I give it four stars: I'd expect it to be more suitable for hi-gain setups than OD-1X. The pedal is not bad and can sound exceptional - still higly depend on what you are plugging it to. I found myself twisting dials back an forth to get well sound, unlike OD-1X which sound great at all dials set to 12. I'll keep this pedal for sure.

It sounds awesome

After purchasing the Boss OD-1X and absolutely loving it, I decided to buy this pedal. Since it is related to the OD-1X, I had high expectations for it. Although I wanted to like it, I knew almost immediately that it didn't have the sound I was after. All across the sweep of the level knobs, it sounded very 'fizzy' and thin sounding. I had the (original) DS-1 and this pedal reminds me a lot of the original. My equipment includes Gibson Les Paul and Fender Am. Std. Strat, guitars into a Marshall half-stack and Fender Frontman amplifiers. Surprisingly, I could not get the sound I wanted using any combination of this equipment. As with all pedals, it comes down to personal preferences, guitar/amp/other pedals used, music genre, etc. This pedal obviously gets some very good reviews, so it might be worth trying. It's just not for me and I ended up returning it... very disappointing.

There is more "clean" part of the tone or "main harmonics" in this sound, more guitar sound in comparison with classic DS-1. It's definitely much closer to tube sound.
