Solid storage system (really more like 4.5 stars)
I have had the unit for almost a year and I consider it a very good buy. I have had no problems with failures or file corruption or security or anything. Maybe I got lucky, but I bought this unit after a lot of research on the web and really feel like I made the right decision. The transfer time between the unit and my computer is phenomenal, it behaves as if it were directly integrated into the computer rather than an USB-attached add-on. In the home network, it also communicates (through it's base computer) speedily and without any interruption. I have had an occasional trouble with the power cord, but I believe this may have more to do with the placement of the unit amongst all my other gadgets than to any fault of the manufacturer. I may even buy another of these, because I've already used most of the space in this one.Don't be turned off buy negative reviews here, there are many good commentaries about Buffalo and their HDs all over the net and I have been very happy with my unit.

Buy from a reputable manufacturer instead!
In short, the 'auto-sleep' software accompanying this product crashed my system and has never worked. That feature is why I bought it. I spoke with Tech support and they assured me that no matter WHAT was wrong with the drive it had to be my system's fault. I've worked on a tech support hotline for pc's for over a year and can assure you the tech support folks have no intention of assisting you in any way other than denying it's their product's fault. I'd encourage you to call Bafallo tech support and run this one past them before you buy this product. None of the packaged software (backup software and auto-off software) work. Buy a harddrive from a reputable dealer in stead (Western Digital, Maxtor or FreeAgent/Maxtor).

Careful
Speaking with a year and a half of experience with this product, you'd be well advised to look elsewhere. Unless, of course, you enjoy trying to get the attention of Tech Support, doing firmware updates, and risking data.

Avoid at all cost
Had one of these less than two months when one day out of the blue it started giving problems and became inaccessible. Brought it back to the shop I bought it from and three months later was given a Lacie in replacement. The shop no longer stocks Buffalo after this and showed me the emails from the Buffalo in relation to my problem and all I can say is their customer support is shocking. The new drive was payed for by the shop itself due to Buffalo's dealing of the sitatuion.

Watch out for failures
I bought two of these drives. Both failed. Luckily one failed quickly and I was able to replace it (with a drive from a different manufacturer). The other one is currently failing. Considering I spent over $200 on each drive, this is very disappointing.

Great drive, works perfectly
I have had this drive for a couple years now. It has worked perfectly this entire time. No loud fans to deal with. Works great. I also use a Buffalo router and both Buffalo products have been rock solid for years.
