great paperback fashion history textbook
I bought 2 fashion history books for my niece, this one and the Smithsonian Fashion The Definitive Visual Guide. She will be blown away by the Smithsonian book also sold here on Amazon. She will love this one as well because she can take this one with her in a handbag. It's full of historical info and tons of beautiful black and white line drawings of clothes, hats, shoes etc. Very inspirational for anyone interested in drawing period fashions.

Favorite book in perfect condition
My local library had the original hardcover of this and I took it out so many times when I was younger. I was thrilled to see it available used in paperback. The book arrived quickly and is in perfect condition. It looks brand new.

Perfect for the Fashion Historian
Excellent book. I got it because I am writing a book on Rose Bertin and it contains information about her that has not been published in any other English sources. There is only a little information about Rose Bertin but it is important.

a must for costuming
it is the same sketches as the older hardbound version I had from the 50s. It is a must have for historical costumers or just halloween. very detailed and accurate information. I do wish it had been updated past the 50s thorough to modern vogues.

Not recommended; much better info available elsewhere.
Originally pblished in 1958, Wilcox did their best, however, compared to the research that is available today, this is a weak summary of what was worn. Invest your research $ elsewhere.

good
book came on time and in great condition.not as in depth; would suggest 'the survey of historic costume' if you're looking for some serious fashion history.this book is short, sweet, and gives you a glimpse.

Very Nice but not for academic studies
Nice introductory book, with description of fashion history from different countries. Black and white drawings. No photos, not academic nor very detailed. Overall good.

Excellent reference for artists
This is an excellent reference for artists who are looking for an extensive collection of fashion designs from many different countries and time periods. The drawings are excellently rendered and organized in a fashion that is easy to use. For someone just wanting to look at the illustrations it has a wealth of visual content as well as supplementary reading that gives more background information on the function and movements of the fashion trends. My only criticism with this book as well as Wilcox's other similar surveys as well as most other historical illustration books would have to be that there is very little exploration of Eastern or Southern fashions. These books tend to focus on European and American fashion trends so if you're looking for a progression of Southern African or far East Asian clothing you would not be satisfied with these books. However these books do explore a lot within all the major time periods and countries that were most well known for advancing fashion starting from the Ancient Egyptians to modern day Europe all in a nicely sized book you can easily carry around with you. I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking to expand their repertoire of clothing designs for illustration, character design, or even historical costume making.

Sehr zufrieden

Required Reference Book
I discovered this book in my college library and i had to buy it.It is up there with my other 'bibles of works' that i shall keep forever! I enjoy the way the costumes are described, the author shows that she have a great deal of experience and knowledge and dare I say, love of costume. It is well drawn enough for one to get a clear outline of how the clothes were worn. The lack of colour illustrations, in this case does not distract, I feel that the written words fill in the colours.Besides, if you are into costume, textiles and fabrics as I am, I am sure you should be able to visualize them as you read about them!A good reference book! One that you could refer to for a long time..A keeper!
