Very fine ballast, should be fine on n gauge layout, a tiny bit on the light colour side but nothing a bit of weathering can not fix. The quantity should last for a while

Purchased for 7mm scale railway layout
This is a realistic size for 7mm scale railway ballast. Ballast tends to be around 1-2 inches in diameter or finer (dependent on era (ballast tends to be larger for mechanical tamping) and location so some grades of ballast are too large for the scale. This looks good when compared to actual photographs of ballasted track for a branchlike around 1950. Good sized bag at a good price.

great for my HO scale model RR layout
I bought the "fine" stuff a while back: not for HO scale, way too big.Then I bought this "extra fine" stuff: great for my HO scale layout, it is just the right size.Some people are reviewing that it is too fine, that it's just sand. Well, buddies, it's sand that is at the exact coarseness to represent track ballast at 1:87 scale. May work with N scale too; I wouldn't know. I can tell you as an old school HOer that it is perfect for HO.
