Second buy of the same fine Canon product
We have used a Canon PC420 copier for over 10 years. It has finally gotten so that it will not regularly pull the paper from the tray without coaxing. I have made good buys and I have made stupid buys...the Canon copier is one of the best buys I have ever made. Great price...great service...long life. The Canon PC 170 is almost identical to the PC420. That is the MAIN reason we have purchased this unit...we have been extremely pleased with the PC420. We have only used the PC 170 for about a month, but I have no reason to believe that it will have any shorter service life than the PC420. Copies are excellent. No warm up time. Operation is swift and quiet. The unit fits on a small chest in our living room.Incidentally, the old PC420 is still working, if a little tempermentally. I am figuring that if I get in there and rough up the now glazed surface on the rubber wheel that pulls the papers through, it will work as well as when it was new a decade or more ago. If you are interested in great b/w copies...you cannot go wrong with the Canon series of copiers. If you are GREEN...they carry the Energy Star symbol.Jim McGahanGrand Island, NE

VERY GOOD FOR WHAT IT IS
If you are looking for a desk top photocopier that sees intermittent use, look no further. If you are looking for a copier that will do what a copying service does or has features like those in the "copy-coffee house", look elsewhere. I have used these small, flat-bed Cannon copiers at my office for over ten years. My receptionist and I use it to make copies of ID and Medical cards, and the forms that our patients need filled out. For this type of light service, you can't beat the unit. Its instant on, ready to copy feature is great; no warm up necessary. It turns itself off after a few minutes of disuse. Although the feeder and exit trays are somewhat flimsy, the rest of the unit is rather durable. The whole unit is quite portable: the trays fold up tidily, with the whole thing being the size of a briefcase. On your desk, it does not take up much space, with the trays folded. You can stack some junk/stuff on top of the machine and it still works. Any of you who work in a small office know that this happens all the time in tight spaces! Be aware that the copying bed does move across the top of the unit which can bump into other items, e.g. stapler, pencil holder, coffee mug, on your desk top. We had a 428 model; this was more expensive. We bought this one as it was less expensive and seemed to do all the same work. The PC428 lasted over 7 years without any repairs or upkeep whatsoever prior to the print quality deteriorating. I expect this one to last just as long as they are quite similar. The cost of the refill cartridge is a bit pricey, but a quick internet search will score a better deal than the local office supply store.I had considered other copiers, with more features and capabilities to replace the worn out PC428, but they were either too expensive, too big, or otherwise too cumbersome to use. The copy quality is good enough for what we need. Again, for the occasional copy (20 times a day at our office) in a small office or home, this Cannon is tops.

Not for copying pages from books
This is a cleverly designed compact copier, but don't buy it if you think you would ever need to copy a page from a book. In order to copy a page from a book one must push down on the book to flatten out the part of the page closest to the spine, and this copier would probably break under that kind of pressure. In addition, the surface (platen, I think they call it) where one places the book to be copied moves back and forth during the copying process, and even if one doesn't push down on the book, a considerable amount of patience and manual dexterity is needed to hold the book perfectly on the surface while it moves. We immediately saw that we would not be able to use this copier, since we occasionally need to copy pages from books, and Amazon was very nice about taking it back even though we had already begun to use the toner cartridge. Amazon even paid the shipping charges to return it.

dead on delivery
finally got a power cord for it and plugged it in and NOTHING. With NO INSTRUCTION BOOK enclosed I had to go on line to see what I was doing wrong and it says nothing. I followed their instructions and still nothing and now have to figure out what to do next or I'm out over $500 I also called Canon and they said they no longer make this product and will not honor any sales of it. Right now, I've purchased my LAST Canon product

Need to constantly change settings, but decent copies
My PC170 made copies that were very light right from day one, but have deteriorated progressively ever since. Basically, they are useless now, they are so light; I've been using the copier about 3 months. I changed cartridges but this has not helped. Now, I'm waiting to hear back from tech support. Pretty irritating. After receiving an e-mail from Canon, the solution is very simple. However, I need to change the settings frequently depending on the darkness of the original. Often, this is known only after making the copies the first time.

Review of Canon PC170 copier
I bought this copier as a replacement for my previous Canon PC 425 copier. The PC 425 worked fine for years until it developed a problem with "ghosting" on copies and not fusing the toner. I liked the design and layout of the PC 425 a bit better than the new one, however functionally, the PC170 does the same basic job and operates the same way (re: speed, quality of copies, etc.) I use the machine for general household BW copying since it is simpler to operate that a scaner/printer/fax combo machine. For serious color copies I use my computer/scanner/printer.I would reccommend this for anyone looking for a simple and relatively low cost way of making small quantiy BW copies.Addendum: The auto exposure (AE) comes on automatically when you turn on the machine. I have found it better to turn it off (press "AE" button to turn off the "A" in the # of copies button)! Otherwise it generally results in dark copies. Better off to set exposure at 2nd dot from left and leave it there. Still like the copier.

Very reliable shop with genuine products. Will definitely buy again!
For the traveling business professional, the Canon PC170 portable device serves as a easily transported personal copier providing high-quality black-and-white duplicates in a lightweight compact design. Weighing in at less than 19 pounds, the Canon PC170 folds into a sleek, compact shape resembling a briefcase complete with handle for easy carrying. The Canon PC170 features Canon's patented RAPID Fusing System, which provides instant warm-up eliminating long waiting time before copying. With no warm-up time required, the Canon PC170 can begin copying immediately at speeds of up to four copies-per-minute (cpm) for letter-size paper and comes equipped with a 50-sheet stack tray that accepts postcard to letter-size paper.
The Canon PC170 offers virtually maintenance-free operation with Canon's exclusive Single Cartridge System, containing the drum, development unit and toner, for performance that requires little-to-no maintenance at just pennies-per-copy. The Canon PC170 personal copier also offers tremendous versatility, copying onto a variety of papers, including stationary, postcards, colored paper, transparencies and labels. Copy quality is exceptional with a choice of automatic or manual exposure and automatic shut-off.
In order to effectively conserve energy, Canon has built an automatic shut-off function into the Canon PC170, designed to automatically turn off the copier after idling unused for 5 1/2 minutes. These energy-saving attributes enable the Canon PC170 to meet the Energy Star guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy. The EPA established the International ENERGY STAR Program in 1992 to help prevent global warming by promoting the development and use of energy-efficient products.
