Nikon D600 Digital Field Guide

Vast improvement over the manual
I just bought this camera and knew I would need assistance in learning its controls (which are different enough from my D300 that I knew there would be a learning curve). Although I downloaded the Nikon manual to my iPad for an upcoming photo trip to Charleston, this is the reference I used for the whole trip. Well organized and helpful. My only complaint is that the section on exposure bracketing doesn't point out that after you activate the bracket mode, all photos taken subsequently will be controlled by the bracket settings until you disable bracketing. (The Nikon manual doesn't point this out either, but I would hope that user-friendly guides like this would be more helpful.) Overall a good investment.

Book will save you a lot of time
While most of the data is the same as in the users manual, the author will give you great tips on the features that are worth learning and those features that are marginal or redundant. If you are upgrading from an earlier generation Nikon DSLR, you probably only need the users manual. But I read this book cover to cover, and now use it as a reference before trying new features in a photo shoot. The D600 is an awesome camera but is not for the casual photographer. This book will quickly help you reach a higher level of competence.

A basic guide to the D600
This was one of the first published guides to the Nikon D600. I got it to help me learn the basic operations of the camera. It is a useful guide. David Busch published his more detailed guide somewhat later. Thom Hogan also has a detailed guide that he sells from his website as an ebook. I have found having a couple different guides is useful since each author provides slightly different information and alternative suggestions. Thomas' book is a useful starting point.

Excellent Guide.
This is a good book, not too technical in explaining the features of the this camera model. I find it more easier to use and set up my D600 and its all because of this book.I highly recommend this book to anyone who own the Nikon D600.

The book is very useful, nicely written and full of useful information way beyond the "extended version of the manual". For example, it gives you quite a few samples of "customer setting" which you can just copy and save to U1 or U2. It also has many useful tricks.

Okay as a reference, but not really a "how-to" book.
If you want to know the name, location, and function of every button on your D600, this is your book.If you want to increase your understanding of how to use them in context for a specific kind of shot, this is not your book.Since I wanted the latter kind of book, I found this book too fact filled, and therefore hard (and boring) to read, but this is probably my fault.I'll keep it as a reference, but I quit reading it.

VERY LIMITED additional information/insight beyond the user manual
Buyers beware - a guide with MSRP of $24.99 and from a reputable publisher like Wiley no less - offers essentially a nice glossy repetition of the owners manual, with VERY limited additional information. And even that additional information, in way of "notes" or "tips" or several additional chapters/appendices, e.g. on Nikon lenses, General Composition Tips, Accessories, is very limited.A few examples of that limited additional value I refer to:- TIP: "To shoot a quick sequence shot, rotate the Release Mode dial to one of the two Continuous shooting modes Ch or Cl"- NOTE: "You can only change image size when using the JPEG file format. RAW files are recorded at the largest size"- Chapter on Lenses: "NIKKOR 14-24 f 2.8 G. This is one of Nikon's best lenses. It has excellent image sharpness from corner to corner at all apertures. It also has a fast constant aperture and is great for low light shooting..."- Appendix A/General Composition tips: "Helpful Hints: Fill the Frame: Try to make sure the subject is the dominant part of the image. Avoid lots of empty space around the subject unless it essential to make the photograph work."If this is the level of insight you are seeking, then perhaps this book is for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking for insight, recommendations on how to set-up and use your camera - save your money and look elsewhere.

Great guide
For an amatuer ( plus ) this book is fantastic. For me the user manual was next to useless , you would have to be a machine to read it ! This is just the job , well laid out and easy to understand. It really is all you need ...... so buy it ! Actually I have purchased several camera guides ..... and this is the best .

Essential help for new camera
Far more useful than the manual that came with the camera. Essential reading when it comes to setting up the camera.

Easier to follow than the 'Manual'
An excellent guide to the D600 and soooo much easier to follow than the manual supplied! I have read it from cover to cover but still use it for reference.
