First time user - Great sound, disappointing range
As a first time user, I was hoping for a bit more than just a 1 mile range out of this set of "40 mile range" radios. Despite that, I will say that within that 1 mile range these sound GREAT and CLEAR. The battery lasts about 8 hours of minimal use before it lets out a super loud beep to let you know it's time to charge them. I'm buying another set for my Dad that lives next door so we can communicate easier when he's out on the property.

Distance Matters
These radios are easy to use, small, & lightweight. We used them in the mountains of Moab, Utah and they worked flawlessly. We separated across 2 mountain ridges and we could hear and be heard very crisply and clearly. I am very hard of hearing and radio messages are very hard for me to pick out. These radios transmit and receive very nicely. I heard every conversation perfectly and the batteries lasted all day (still going from sun up to sun down in June). All of the 4x4 drivers with us are so impressed, they have already ordered their own. Well done Midland.

Best range from the 5 brands I tried.
Did a comparison a year ago and the older GTX’s had the best range, these new ones are even better.

Work well, designed well.
I ordered these Midland radios to replace Uniden SX409-3VP, 3-Pack, FRS Two-Way-Radios, which did not work from the start. The reception was extremely weak so as to be almost inaudible. Returned them and got these. The volume is excellent, with a knob control on top instead of a button which could be accidentally hit. They come with ear phone and microphone with a clip you can attach to clothing which is very handy so you don't have to dig out the radio from a pocket. The weather station is a nice plus that actually works. The buttons are flush so as to make it less likely that they are pushed by accident in a pocket. Haven't tested the range yet, but so far happy with these. I hope they last! Uniden lost a customer with their poor customer service, having refused to honor their one year warranty.

Radio
I like it as far an additional to my uniform. Great quality. Also did great when I was traveling with my friend and we had 2 vehicles. What I dislike. In a building where I work. It's 43 levels. And I have dead spots where we get no comms, 2nd radio dies quicker then the 1st one even when I pull it off the charger the same tike. And Turn them on at the sametime.Unable to pick up local chatter as well. But that's OK. I have a scanner

Longer range than other portables
Read the FCC filings, seemed like these legitimately pushed higher wattage than your usual radios. Seems like most comparable radios are 0.5W, and claim 38-ish miles, but in reality only go a little over 1 mile in unobstructed clear conditions. I wanted at least another mile, so took a chance on these, which appear to be about 2W, and claim 40 miles. Tested at almost 2 miles with some obstructions and they are very useable. 1.5 miles in urban environment (high obstructions) and still useable. Overall, a better powered highly portable radio. Looks to me like in order to get more out of a radio, you really start to sacrifice portability and usability, with many requiring programming. Not sure about battery life yet, I ordered spares as I will need them regardless.

Don't Get Them Wet!
We were really pleased with these radios... til I got caught in the rain with one. You'd think something designed for active lifestyle and outdoor use could handle the rain, but you'd be wrong. I contacted Midland about this and they basically said "Too bad. They're not designed for use in the rain." Their description says "water resistant" but I say BS! I expected more out of Midland.
