I thoroughly enjoy Manning's work - as a practitioner turned academic and one that likes a foot in both camps, I find his thoughts refreshing. I am frightened by the continued evolution (or refinement?) of police as agents of control in society over being a police "service." I see few courageous chiefs willing to pull the reins and stop this move toward authoritarianism. The Wars on Drugs and Terrorism are just excuses for the "culture" which Manning aptly illuminates.
