Who's That Man: Tribute To Conny Plank (4CD Box)

Beautiful package .Interesting mix of tributes.A must for fans of this producer/musician

Firstly this is a great intro to both Conny & Krautrock housed in a neat 4 c.d. boxset. As expected the production/sound quality is supreme & Conny was instrumental in assisting & even collaborating with many of the most important Krautrock bands of the 1970's, including Kraftwerk, Neu & especially Cluster (he was virtually the 3rd member of the band & particularly his many collaborations with Moebius). The 4th cd is the reason i bought the 4 cd set, to finally hear a Moebius/Plank concert & this was truely inspiring and exciting electronic music, mostly derived from earlier seminal studio albums e.g.1983 'Zero Set'. So why only 4 stars?The first 2 cds of the 4 cd set is a compilation of his many production efforts yet with such a vast array of his production work they both only clock in at 65 & 62 minutes leaving potentially 30 minutes of further material which could have been included. Also i feel it would have been far better to order the work chronologically so that the listener could have had a view of how Conny's skills evolved & developed over time. I also feel that these 2 c.d.s could have been divided between his work purely as a producer & his work as a producer & musical collaborator.The 3rd cd is the most disappointing with reworkings of his various collaborative efforts, this includes a repeat of a phew song which is virtually the same remix where both go on for longer than 10 minutes. The other reworkings are also mostly disappointing especially where its almost difficult to discern the true wonder & strength of the songs (Infiltration & Farmer Gabriel). Instead they are ground down to incredibly boring meandering drum beats & little of the original music evident. This is not motorink this is musical blasphemy, at least they could have added wild violin or radiophonics. The only successful remix is Automats reworking of Cluster & Eno's 'Broken Head' which they have managed to make more funky & fun whilst retaining the integrity of the song (ie it is still very recognisable). There was virtually no information about any of the songs besides who wrote it (no length of songs or Conny's production methods) rather you get a few musicians hazy & vague reminiscences which appear to be aimed at adding to the mystery of Conny rather than clarifying anything.Finally they tantalisingly incuded 1 or 2 snippets of his work, where i am sure this box set would have been the perfect vehicle to include an entire cd of his work or outtakes as a 3rd member of Cluster. I applaud Gronland for constucting this compilation but it could have been so much more.

Die Box ist schon optisch und haptisch ein Genuß, da hat sich wirklich jemand Mühe gegeben. Auch das Booklet ist liebevoll gemacht.Und die Musik? Naja, das muss man schon mögen. Aber wer auf der elektronischen/experimentellen Schiene unterwegs ist und Neu, Cluster und Eno mag findet hier eine sehr schöne Zusammenstellung und eine angemessene Würdigung der Arbeit von Conny Plank.
