A wise cracking parrot!
What's not to like? This parrot can speak but has the ability to talk. An interesting question as to whether we are the only talking entities on this planet!

SHEER, SHEER DELIGHT!!!
I am an adult. No children. Not a fan of animated films (didn't much like "Babe"). That said, this film completely captivated me and even left me believing in the enduring power of love and the great importance of it in our topsy-turvy world.Bought it on a fluke after reading a few reviews while surfing [...]. Didn't expect much. Got everything.I highly recommend it, both for adults and children (what a perfect film for a family to watch together), and here's why.Oh, where to start. I would start with the fact that the most perfect voice was chosen to be our talking, and very smart, albeit sad, Paulie. Actor Jay Morh (the voice) also plays a role in the film very well indeed. His voice as a human is completely different than that of Paulie's, which shows this actor's talented skill. Now what else do we have. A script which is entirely unpredictable. There is nothing trite, no cliches, the screenwriting (by Laurie Craig) is at its best, original and highly creative. The story, well, it flows along, happy at times and sometimes sad. Sometimes very, very happy, and sometimes very, very sad. But the outcome is one of the most beautiful and sensitive scenes I have ever seen in any film. The acting: one of the country's most sterling actresses, Gena Rowlands, excels in her role as an eccentric, impulsive, loving and honest woman who befriends Paulie to the max. I believe the other great performance in the film was given by Tony Shalhoub, who has gone on to such great success since the making of this film. On watching "Paulie," one can easily see why. His performance is sensitive and touching, honest and just plain admirable. Also, great commendations to the film's director, John Roberts, for finding the truth within himself to direct a story with such integrity. And let's not forget the 14 conures, all who play Paulie with such poignant believability, or the dancing ensemble of conures who perform a musical routine (even in costume) as well as humans could do it.Have a good time with this one, no matter how old you are. It's actually insprirational, although it hits the highest mark in all areas!

A MOVIE OF LOVE & TEARS OF JOYโฆTHE ENTIRE FAMILY WILL ENJOY!!!
"PAULIE" (1998) This is an award-winning realistic fantasy of brilliant simplicity and surprising emotional impact. I was instantly touched by the clear, poignant voice of the intelligent, feisty, abused little parrot (Paulie) and his perilous quest to find his lost loveโฆa little girl named Marie.Written by Laurie Craig and directed by John Roberts, with an original score by John Debney; this sensitive, multi-layered and heartwarming movie masterpiece evokes intense feelings of love, loss, longing, personal triumph, and the eternal hope of a joyful reunion.Starring Tony Shalhoub, Gena Rowlands & Cheech Marin, with Jay Mohr as the voice of little Paulie. Insightfully written and acted with sensitivity, yet without trite or maudlin sentiment. This is a timeless 'feel good' movie that we need to view occasionally to remind ourselves of what is really important in life (love & laughter).TRIVIA: The role of Misha, the Russian immigrant who befriends Paulie, played by the great actor Tony Shalhoub, is alone worth the price of admission. Tony went on to star in his own detective series โMONKโ that has since become a classic. The fine actress Gena Rowlands (wife of the late John Cassavetes) is today alive and well at age 88. Cheech Marin can be seen in reruns of โNash Bridgesโ, and Jay Mohr in โGhost Whisperer.โ (If this review was helpful in any way, please click on the "Helpful" key below. Thanks).

superb children's film - for everyone!
Paulie takes as its starting point the loyalty of parrots which are apparently very affectionate towards their owners. This one remembers his for decades, it seems ... the film has some sad moments but a lot of sparky comedy too, and the different episodes turn it into a kind of rites of passage movie for the parrot who gets involved in some pretty illegal goings-on, escaping from this into further exploitation - it's a bit like a feathered version of an 18th century novel. Jay Mohr deserves special credit for voicing the parrot so brilliantly, while also taking a role as a most unsavoury criminal. The film doesn't make it clear that it is the same person, as he obviously does a different more parrot-like voice. The idea that parrots can speak for real is not entirely fictitious - I recently read an article about a bird in America that could do just that, and put verbs into the past tense - and it was a teaching book, so presumably quite reliable in its sources. Gena Rowlands also lends a special feeling to the film and the moment when Paulie brings her comb to her - her sight is failing at this point - is a moment of grace it is wonderful to see in a children's film, as I'm sure many would respond to it, and that it would tap into their own sense of kindness. It really is one of a kind!

You Really Should Listen To What Paulie Has To Say
I know this is a children's film but, I love this heartfelt story about a parrot named Paulie.Paulie tells the tale from the parrots point of view, telling the caretaker and you the viewer on why he is the way he is.I loved every minute of this film. Jay Mohr is the voice of Paulie who plays his voice talents very well. Tony Shalhoub plays the caretaker who listens to Paulie's fantastic story. The story really moved me and why shouldn't it? You get a talking parrot, a caretaker who listens to Paulie's story and fantastic supporting cast like Gena Rowlands, Jay Mohr and Tony Shalhoub.I give this film 10/10 as you really should listen to what Paulie has to say.
