An astonishing fictional account of the unending series of murders in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico during 1996. Idealistic Juarez newcomer Officer Blanca (Ana de la Reguera, Nacho Libre) faces the local epidemic of homicides with a strong commitment to bring justice into the small town. Instead she finds a shockingly indifferent government, overrun by fatalism and apathy. Backyard is an uncompromising look into the pitfalls of a resigned society trying to survive without a moral compass. Also starring Jimmy Smits (Outlaw, The Jane Austen Book Club, Star Wars: Episode II and III).

Excellent docudrama
This film is the finest achievement yet in terms of explaining what is going on in Ciudad Juárez with the femicides. There was a documentary made a few years back--"On the Edge"--and it had its good points, but "Backyard" actually explains much more clearly what forces have coalesced to create such horrific conditions in the border town of Ciudad Juárez: global corporations (including the US, of course) seeking super-cheap labor, a depleted economy in Mexico that brings thousands of poor rural people to the cities in search of work, drug cartels, corruption that characterizes all levels of politics and the police, angry men who resent all the women who work so cheaply in the maquiladoras (factories), and poverty. Thanks, NAFTA: job well done!It is a docudrama: it's fictional, but outlines all of the possible and likely motives behind all of the torture, rape, mutilation and murder of women in CJ. It will open your eyes.

Very powerful film on the mass murder of women factory workers in Juarez Mexico
Awesome movie based on the femicide of female factory workers in Juarez and other cities in Mexico. Very engaging, suspenseful, well-acted (the protagonist, Ana de Reguera, is not only gorgeous but plays awesome parts. In "Backyard" she plays a police officer with total integrity in a cesspool of corruption thanks to disgustingly greedy and cruel police, politicians and others. One of my favorite movies of all time. Must watch.

Interesting
Film was dark but suspenseful. Gruesome parts. Movie has lots of turns and left many questions for me at the end. This horror still exists today...not sure if the storys in the movie were taken from actual cases but per my research many still to disappear and come up murdered.

Better than average for this Genre
I have several movies like this one, about the murders of women in Mexico along the Bordertown of Juarez. The theme is unsettling, and many movies like this one are poor ripoffs of the Genre, or the situation. This is better done, and the acting is better.

backyard
watched it solely for Jimmy Smits but enjoyed the story line. Prefer watching it in Spanish with English subtitles because in English the voices never match the character.

Gripping, Mexican `True crime' story
Set in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico in 1996 this tells the story of what happened that year to a number of women that disappeared. It transpired that they were being taken for sex and casually murdered after suffering brutal horrors. Most of these women had been drawn to the city to work in the multi national factories where they are treated just one step up from slaves for wages so low most would not consider it a living. Then a woman cop turns up to investigate what is going on - this is Blanca Bravo and she is one of those that gets stuck in like a terrier and starts to make herself unpopular by her tenacity. We also have some of the stories of the girls this involves and the duplicitous honour code that makes people act like vicious fools. This is a film that has a message but one that most will be aware of - that is bad things happen. The sad fact is that these `disappearances' still continue to this day. The film is `worthy' in the sense that it has something to say but I have no problem with that in the least. The acting is all brilliant, the violence is hard hitting but far from gratuitous. It is the sort of film that just holds your attention and keeps you hanging on all the way through. In Spanish and some English with very good sub titles - this is a fine example of South American cinema.

The USA's close neighbour under the spotlight - U may never trust a Mexican Police Chief again
At times this is a very graphic film which really doesn't pull many punches. Well acted with a script that adds to the realism you have to keep pinching yourself and asking 'how could this really happen'. I understand that areas of Mexico have serious problem of deprivation and poverty and this film examines the roll of big business in the everyday lives of Mexican workers where the $/Hr is king and you can forget about decent terms & conditions. I can understand that this is a hard watch but it is well worth the effort.

Good film
Very good mexican film. It shows what happens or what happened (I hope), in the USA's backyard, Ciudad Juarez. At the end you realise that the problem is not easy to solve. Good plot.
