Good one
I like such books which are properly researched and lay bare the naked facts about these maharajas and maharanis...the lifestyle they lived and the opulence with which they survived and ruled...its a must read book for any history enthusiasts who holds a neutral view about these aristrocratic people......

interesting first hand account of the lives of Maharaja's
This is one of those books which gets read by own, you feel compelled to return to it to read next chapter just because the tales are very interesting. It also gives first hand account of so many events and lives of maharajas. Its astonishing to know that such an elite class of people had poorer morality and integrity standards than that of a common man.

They enjoyed in the name of Rajas
The pomp and show of the Indian Maharajas and their whims and fancies with the people's money. They enjoyed in the name of Rajas. A very good book with first hand information., and one has to read it to know the so called the Maharajas' history.

Turgid repetitive writing combined with typo howlers
On its initial release in the early to mid 1970s, kids like us were forbidden this book by our local circulating library walla who would shoo us away from this "adults only" book. By the time I grew up the book was out of print and unavailable and the library also didnt have it.I finally got to read this book 40 odd years after its publication . And I wonder what was all the fuss about! For a starters the writing is repetitive . Maharaja A had tons of wives and concubines and sex parties. Maharaja B had tons of wives and concubines and sex parties. Maharaja C had .... yes one gets the ideas that the Maharajas didn't care for the subjects over whom they rules but almost 70% of the book is about the sexual escapades of the Maharajas .The remaining 30% is about the palace intrigues and the means by which the various states were controlled by the British and this is perhaps the most interesting interesting section of the book. However this is dealt very briefly in the last few pages while the majority of the book is about Maharajas searching for wives and concubines and their lavish parties to please the visiting British or in competition with their neighboring state or a family rival. In translating from print to Kindle there are enormous typo howlers like gentleman becoming gendulman and so on.The people who did the kindle edition should seriously look at it again as almost every page in Kindle has at least one or more typos.Perhaps it was scandalous in the early 70s but in the 21st century such writing about the sexual escapades, some of them bordering on the explicit, looks and sound very school boyish, almost like a semi pornographic novel which is why probably one reviewer has called for a ban on the book. How amusing ! Given such overblown indulgent sybaritic lifestyles , the accession to the Indian Republic wasn't something that was received well by most of them but it did happen and perhaps we are better off for that .At best it is interesting peep into an era gone by .
