Q: Is this a "relaxed fit" or is it clingy like a muscle shirt?

I purchased this short in my size (large) and it fits relaxed/comfortable. Not tight. This shirt will likely only accentuate your rippling abs (or beer baby) if you go a size lower. In my case, going a size lower would also expose an undesirable midriff when reaching for a dropped sock in the laundromat.

Q: Does this offer any sun protection (UPF)?

You can find articles online about UPF ratings for different fabrics. It looks like polyester is generally UPF 30+. I can't say for this particular shirt so I would contact the manufacturer. For reference, a white cotton shirt only offers a UPF rating of 5 (source: REI), so the answer claiming that any shirt offers sun protection is...well, not entirely wrong, since they offers some, but what you really want is UPF 50+ and most shirts don't provide that.

Q: Will it work for hiking? Or will abrasion from the backpack damage the fabric?

I think it would work well with a backpack. Material is thick for high heat of summer but I do wear them indoors right now. Perfect weight for fall and underlayer for winter.
