A real substitute for metal halide lights.

I wanted to replace several metal halide lights in my shop that had become unreliable. They are a mixture of 350 and 400 watt lights.I previously bought a bunch of wall packs that claimed to be equal to 300 watt metal halide lights. They weren't even close. This light is a different story.I rewired one of the dead lights to take this replacement and it works very well. It is necessary to bypass the ballast and capacitors inside the metal halide power supply so that the LED unit gets straight 120 or 240.This is an update:I was so pleased with this light that I got 3 more and replaced the rest of the lights in my shop. The old metal halide lights were pretty good but these make a big difference. They have better color and though they are rated a little less than the metal halide lights were they seem brighter. I've tried a lot of lighting answers for this shop and this is the one I will stay with.I did come across one problem. The metal halide bulbs have a cone shaped contact in the center of the socket. These LEDs have a rounded contact that is fairly blunt. The sockets in most of my lights have a shield around the center contact so the LEDs didn't make a connection. I had to bend the contact a bit to get the LEDs to light up. Not a big deal but a head scratcher until I figured it out. Not all sockets are this way.I think it is not quite as bright but the color rendering is better so it is better overall. I like pure white light, not orange. These are very white. I will be saving about 60% on electricity over the metal halide lights and they come on almost instantly, which is a big plus. If they last it will be wonderful. There is a big problem in the LED light industry right now in that they quote light outputs that are completely unrealistic. This light is rated reasonably. This is a second update:I got the other lights installed and have been using them for a week. There is no doubt in my mind that these lights produce better illumination than the HID lights I replaced. I can see much better. Maybe the lumens are lower, I don't know, but I can see better without a doubt.Just to let you know, these lights have a fan inside to cool them. It isn't silent so if you are looking for no sound these lights are not for you. The fan isn't very loud. In fact they are much quieter than the HID lights they replaced but they make a slight whirring noise.

Great light

Great bulb. It is larger than it looks, so note the dimensions for the housing you have in mind. The bulb requires an E39->E26 adaptor, but you can get those cheap... I got this one for under $10:  Generic E26 MEDIUM Edison - E39 MOGUL Base Light Bulb Enlarger Socket Converter Adapter WHITE There a half a second delay when you turn it on, then you instantly get full brightness. A quiet fan runs inside the bulb, but you can only hear it in a very still room, otherwise there is no buzz or noise. The bulb will get hot after extended use, but I found I could still grab hold of it even after 5 or 10 minutes of use and it was warm but not hot. The light is very intense... it leaves rows of dots in your vision if you glance at it, so overhead is definitely best for mounting. The 150watt version has 12 strips of 84 LEDs around the sides, and 58 LEDs on the top, so over 1,000 LEDs in all, for very uniform lighting.

Almost gave it 4 stars because this is too bright!!! Great for high ceilings out of line of sight.

For standard height garages I'd recommend the 60w option, but RuggedGrade is the best brand I've used yet and a corn bulb gives very even lighting compared to gimmicky alternatives.Which color temperature is best? In my opinion 3,000K is the way to go. 3000K is a visually pleasant color temperature, yellow light is rumored to promote healthier serotonin levels (better sleep quality) and longer waves go farther for more effective lighting w/ higher ceilings (such as bass vs. treble or big waves vs. tiny ripples). The 125w option requires an E26 male x E39 female adapter to use this in a standard cheap E26 (26mm base) ceramic garage light fixture. I have 3 primary bulbs in my garage, so I think I'll likely go with the 60w option... if this is in the line of sight on a typical garage height it's simply too bright, but I might keep it for directly over my primary work area.Good lighting has been a necessary tool in my garage for almost a decade, so I've had quality garage lighting for a long time. I just got this 125w bulb in the mail today, and I'm sold on the brand... very even and crisp lighting, and lots of it obviously at 16,250 lumens. This thing is so big that it comes with a lanyard, so a lag eye into a ceiling truss will be needed for safe install, and this would put significant strain on the bulb or fixture if mounted horizontally, so vertical mounting only. I wasn't sure if this would be safe to mount in my garage, but to my surprise it was cool to the touch despite being fanless.Very impressed with the light... it's hard for me to say too much when it comes to brightness, but I think this might actually be there (maybe). This is the equivalent of about 20 old school 60 watt incandescent bulbs, so most people would be absolutely shocked to turn this on for the first time, but I've had lots of light in my garage for a long time, but not nearly this much... this thing is a monster!60-watt option probably better for most buyers unless your ceilings are beyond about 12-15 feet or so, and remember you'll need to buy an adapter in order to install this monster in a standard garage fixture... it's designed to replace HPS and MH parking lot and street light types of bulbs.

Bright, clean light.

We used these in the counter area of a major car rental facility as an upgrade to their 175 watt MH fixtures. The existing lighting was not sufficient to the management so, having used LED corn bulbs at different locations, in different applications, I decided on these. They worked perfectly in a high hat type fixture, and I received very good remarks from my customer. I ordered 18 bulbs at 5000K, but four of them came 3000K. I was able to use the four in an equal pattern and let my customer know what the difference in color was. He was so pleased with the overall installation that he told it didn't bother him. The 5000K bulb to me in a much brighter and cleaned light. It really brightened things up. The customer doesn't always see what I see, so when they are happy enough to make a positive comment, I feel a great sense of accomplishment. The delivery was quick as well. Overall my experience was very good.
