Maritime encyclopedia of part of the world
In a word, "disappointing". All that money spent and all those highly qualified, distinguished and worldly academic authors contributing to a work that contains too many gaps. I'm sure that, like me, other reasonably knowledgeable readers will be disappointed in the coverage of subjects about which they are particularly interested. It could be, and should have been for the price, so much better. It is far too north Atlantic focused. There are more people and there is plenty of interesting history in other parts of the world.Neil Baird, Chairman and former Editor-in-Chief, Baird Maritime.

worth every penny
At this price you are entitled to expect something special - and this really is. It is as wide ranging in its coverage of maritime matters as anyone could wish. I had imagined that it would be dealing primarily with staightforward history (Trafalgar and all that) but it is much more adventurous in its coverage and more than touches on economic and political issues of current importance. It is in the larger format of many recent OUP multi-volume publications which makes it bulkier than strictly necessary but the plus side of this is that there is more room for the many illustrative photographs and diagrams and the text is large enough to read easily. A handsome addition to anyone's library.
